Circa 1990,<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">the Cornell librarian and lifelong Ithacan started posting a daily haiku in the stacks <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">elevator&nbsp;where he worked&nbsp;(see <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.news.cornell.edu\/Chronicle\/96\/3.14.96\/graffiti.html\"><EM><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\">Cornell Chronicle<\/FONT><\/EM><\/A><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">, &#8220;In Mann Library, the graffiti is poetic,<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">thanks to one man,&#8221; March 14, 1996).&nbsp; After a decade of elevator haiku, Tom started <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">placing his daily offering (by an extended community of haijin friends) at the Main Door <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">of the Mann Library Addition.&nbsp;&nbsp;Those who can&#8217;t be there in&nbsp;person, can find Tom&#8217;s daily <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">haiku by clicking a link on the home page of the <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/mann.library.cornell.edu\/\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\">Library&#8217;s website<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">. <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/media-cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/ClausenMug.jpg\" alt=\"ClausenMug\" \/>&nbsp; Tom&#8217;s also been co-editor of the&nbsp;<FONT color=\"black\">esteemed <\/FONT><\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.haikuworld.org\/books\/redmoon\/anthologies.html\"><EM><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" color=\"black\" size=\"2\">Red Moon Anthology<\/FONT><\/EM><\/A><EM><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\"> of English <\/FONT><\/EM><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\"><FONT size=\"2\"><EM>Language Haiku <\/EM>since its launching in 1996.&nbsp; More important for our purposes, however, <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">Tom has been writing haiku since the late 1980&#8217;s.&nbsp; Thanks to his generous spirit, visitors to <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">this site will be able to see and feel for themselves why his work has been recognized and <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">highly respected for more than a dozen years.<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">I connect with Tom&#8217;s haiku (and other short poetry, such as tanka) because his attitude<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">toward life&#8217;s vicissitudes seems to be much like mine.&nbsp; The <EM>Red Moon Anthology<\/EM> says<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">that Tom Clausen &#8220;half accepts change yet is always grateful for the constancy of nature, <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">the seasons and haiku celebrating them.&#8221;&nbsp;In his essay &#8220;<\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.modernhaiku.org\/essays\/AmericanHaikuFuture.html\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\">America&#8217;s Haiku Future<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">,&#8221; Cor van <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">den Heuvel (Autumn 2003) notes:<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">&#8220;Though he treats the ups and downs of marriage and being a parent, <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">his experience seems to have been that the ups seem to make up for <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">the downs.&#8221; <\/FONT><\/DIV><\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">Tom gives us&nbsp;a glimpse into his haiku ethos in the essay <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.poetrylives.com\/SimplyHaiku\/SHv3n2\/features\/Tom_Clausen.html\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">From Conflict to Poetry<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">, which <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">appears in the newest edition of <EM>Simply Haiku<\/EM> (Summer 2005, vol. 3, #2):&nbsp; <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">&#8220;Haiku is the perfect worry stone. In my life I have found considerable <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">solace in being able to write about my personal conflicts, moments where <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">I felt moved to pause, reflect, regroup and recognize that even in conflict <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">and distress are silver linings and the potential for poetry that each of us <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">can find in our heart . . . and in turn move on from our conflict through the <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">poetry we create from it.&#8221; <\/FONT><\/DIV><\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">If you want to learn more about Tom and his poetry, I suggest the student papers&nbsp;
