Combine errands; avoid packing items on the car <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\" align=\"left\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">roof (can cut down efficincy 5%);&nbsp; remove excess weight (no, not your <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\" align=\"left\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">spouse) &#8212; 100 fewer pounds can save 2%. <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\" align=\"left\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\" align=\"left\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\"><FONT size=\"2\"><STRONG>Maintain your car<\/STRONG> &#x2013; keep the engine tuned, tires properly inflated and <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\" align=\"left\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">aligned, change the oil on schedule, and check and replace air filters regularly. <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\" align=\"left\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">Replacing clogged filters can increase gas mileage up to 10 percent.<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\" align=\"left\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\" align=\"left\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\"><FONT size=\"2\"><STRONG>Use the proper octane level<\/STRONG> &#x2013; if your engine isn&#8217;t knocking with regular <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\" align=\"left\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">octane, there&#8217;s no&nbsp;benefit to go higher.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/FONT><\/DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT><\/BLOCKQUOTE><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\"><br \/>\n<P dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\" align=\"left\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\"><EM><STRONG><FONT color=\"red\">update<\/FONT><\/STRONG><\/EM>: As we stated in a <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/2005\/06\/14#a3993\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\">post on June 14<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\">, 2005, <FONT size=\"2\">&#8220;driving at 10 miles an hour above the 65 <\/FONT><FONT size=\"2\">miles-per-hour limit increases fuel consumption <\/FONT><FONT size=\"2\">by 15 percent.&#8221; <EM>(See NYT<\/EM>, &#8220;Unmentioned <\/FONT><\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2005\/05\/01\/business\/01oil.html?ex=1272600000&amp;en=4cef66ea0e5c53d5&amp;ei=5090&amp;partner=rssuserland&amp;emc=rss\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\"><STRONG>Energy Fix<\/STRONG><\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">: A 55M.P.H. Ever see a &#x201C;Deaf Child in Neighborhood&#x201D; sign? <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" align=\"left\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">Hybrids make us all, in effect, deaf.
