The least the &#8220;Haiku Police&#8221; can do is suggest a very practical <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">yet&nbsp;enjoyable guide to understanding what makes a poem a haiku and <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">what makes for&nbsp;good haiku.&nbsp;&nbsp;I unequivocally recommend <FONT color=\"black\"><A href=\"http:\/\/terebess.hu\/english\/usa\/gurga.html\">poet<\/A><\/FONT>-editor <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\"><A href=\"http:\/\/www.brooksbookshaiku.com\/haikupoets\/gurga.html\"><FONT color=\"black\">Lee Gurga<\/FONT><\/A>&#8216;s&nbsp;<EM><A href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/tg\/detail\/-\/0974189405\/ref=pd_sr_ec_ir_b\/104-1569557-1267912?v=glance&amp;s=books&amp;st=*\">Haiku: A Poet&#8217;s Guide<\/A><\/EM> (2003)&nbsp;for anyone wanting to <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">become a better haiku reader or a haiku poet.&nbsp; I wish I would stop <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">spending so much time on the non-haiku side of my weblog and spend <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">more time absorbing and practicing Gurga&#8217;s advice.&nbsp; <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">You can get a taste for&nbsp;Gurga&#8217;s writing and <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">insights, at the <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\"><EM>Haiku World<\/EM><\/FONT><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\"> website,<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">which has posted a chapter from <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">the book called &#8220;<\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.haikuworld.org\/begin\/lgurga.jun2003.html\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\">Writing and Revising Haiku<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">.&#8221;&nbsp; <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">As for folks who think <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">haiku is about form rather than substance, Lee laments:<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">&#8220;Things have not changed appreciably since Harold Henderson <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">observed more than thirty years ago, &#x201C;experience has proved <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">that beginners, unless they know at least something about Japanese <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">standards and conventions, are apt to produce poems that have no <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">relation whatever to haiku except in form.&#x201D; . . .<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">&#8220;The number of people who are aware that haiku is not simply a <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">form has risen dramatically, but it sometimes seems that the number <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">of people who are not has risen even faster.&#8221; <\/FONT><\/DIV><\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">Naturally, the Guide will help you understand the substance and spirit of &#8220;real&#8221;
