Wallace, from his <a href=\"http:\/\/declarationsandexclusions.typepad.com\/foolblog\/2005\/05\/no_meme_is_an_i.html\"><em>Fool in the Forest<\/em><\/a> perch.  It&#8217;s the 7-question quiz<\/font><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"> about reading habits that has been orbiting the blogosphere over the past few<\/font><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"> months.  Just as I hate answering True\/False questions without being allowed<\/font><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"> to drop footnotes, I can&#8217;t imagine answering questions about my reading habits by<\/font><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"> naming only one book at a time. Which book do <\/strong><\/font><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><strong>you want to be?<\/strong><\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/0060531045\/qid=1116022612\/sr=2-2\/ref=pd_bbs_b_2_2\/104-1569557-1267912\"><strong><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><em>One Hundred Years of Solitude<\/em><\/font><\/strong><\/a><font size=\"2\"><font face=\"Arial\"> &#8212; by Gabriel Garcia Marquez.  It&#8217;s the first<\/font><\/font><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"> novel that I ever wanted to read twice (and then actually did).  It brings a sense <\/font><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">of <\/font><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">humor, magic and irony to a <\/font><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">deeply tragic world.  It reminds us of the importance (and slipperiness) of memory. <\/font><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><strong>2. Have you ever had a crush on a fictional character?<\/strong> <strong>  <\/strong>I hate to sound <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">ancient, but I really can&#8217;t remember whether I had &#8220;crushes&#8221; on characters in <\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">books as an adolescent or young man &#8212; for one thing, there weren&#8217;t a lot of<\/font><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"> heroines featured in my reading list. (Does lust count?)  My first crush on a <\/font><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">movie actress playing <\/font><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">a character from a novel was <a href=\"http:\/\/imdb.com\/name\/nm0001046\/\"><font color=\"black\">Julie Christie<\/font><\/a><font color=\"black\"> in <em><a href=\"http:\/\/imdb.com\/title\/tt0060390\/\"><font color=\"black\">Fahrenheit 451<\/font><\/a><\/em><\/font><\/font><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"> (1966, when I was 16). My first lesson in how much could be said (and <\/font><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">unsaid) with just a few words.<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/tg\/detail\/-\/080213422X\/qid=1116022407\/sr=1-1\/ref=sr_1_1\/104-1569557-1267912?v=glance&amp;s=books\"><strong><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">The Painted Bird<\/font><\/strong><\/a><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"> (1965) by Jerzy Kosinski.  An important book in <\/font><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">my life as a reader.   The young protagonist&#8217;s struggle for survival in<\/font><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"> a brutish world is a call to conscience and a reminder of man&#8217;s <\/font><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">capacity for evil.  It is also a testament to the power of lean verbiage.<\/font><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"> [I&#8217;ve even got the Large Print edition, in case I lose my glasses.]<\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/0375406182\/qid=1116023113\/sr=2-3\/ref=pd_bbs_b_2_3\/104-1569557-1267912\"><strong><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><em>Plainsong<\/em><\/font><\/strong><\/a><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"> (1999)&#8211; by Kent Haruf.  With a very different kind of plain<\/font><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"> prose, <\/font><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Haruf shows how open minds and hearts <\/font><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">can make &#8220;community&#8221; <\/font><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">a <\/font><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">reality among disparate folk, despite a world of problems.  The<\/font><font size=\"2\"><font face=\"Arial\"> <\/font><\/font>compassion of the characters engulfs the reader.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/tg\/detail\/-\/0395825172\/qid=1116022721\/sr=1-1\/ref=sr_1_1\/104-1569557-1267912?v=glance&amp;s=books\"><strong><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><em>The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language<\/em><\/font><\/strong><\/a><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"> (4th Ed.,<\/font><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"> 2000 &#8212; or then-current edition).  There&#8217;s is so much information in the<\/font><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"> 2000 pages, presented in such interesting and useful ways (and with<\/font><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"> great illustrations), that it&#8217;s a treat for any lover of the English language<\/font><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">. <\/font><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<blockquote><\/blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Yikes, I can&#8217;t count!  Of course, I <em>must<\/em> take a volume of English-language haiku.  <\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">If I have to choose one, it would be<\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/tg\/detail\/-\/0393321185\/ref=pd_sim_books_2\/002-9728616-3404061?v=glance&amp;s=books\"><em><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">The Haiku Anthology<\/font><\/em><\/a><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"> (2000) by Cor Van Den <\/font><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">Heuvel.  It has 800 haiku<\/font><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"> from the best haijin of the past half century.
