For lots of reasons, the affection is mutual.<\/span><span>  Search<\/span><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font size=\"2\"><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\"><span>engines help turn our modest troves of information into a giant <\/span><span>treasury of knowledge <\/span><span>(or, at <\/span><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font size=\"2\"><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\"><span>least, content), that is easily accessed by anyone with a browser<\/span><span>.  <em>And<\/em>, more to the <\/span><span>point, <\/span><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font size=\"2\"><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\"><span>Google <em>et al.<\/em> help those searchers find <em>us<\/em> &#8212; even if they <\/span><span>weren&#8217;t looking for us. I had never conceived of this very real potential to<\/font><\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font size=\"2\"><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\"><span>reach <\/span><span>such a <\/span><span>broad audience &#8212; far beyond regular visitors &#8212; <\/span><span>when I began putting together <\/span><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font size=\"2\"><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\"><span><em>ethicalEsq<\/em> in May 2003, nor even a year ago, when <em>f\/k\/a<\/em> was <\/span><span>born and haiku became a <\/span><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">full partner with punditry. Although <\/span><\/span><\/font><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font size=\"2\"><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\"><span><span><font color=\"black\">such experiments may be taking place, I agree with Jerry <\/font><\/span><\/span><span><span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.netlawblog.com\/archives\/000617.html\"><font color=\"black\">Lawson<\/font><\/a> that weblogs add <\/span><\/span><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font size=\"2\"><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\"><span><span>too much value to Google&#8217;s service for it to greatly <\/span><\/span><span><span>change algorithms to disadvantage <\/span><\/span><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span><span><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">weblogs.  <\/font><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span><span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font size=\"2\"><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\"><span><span>Indeed, if the evolving algorithms <\/span><\/span><span><span>make search results more <a href=\"http:\/\/searchenginewatch.com\/searchday\/article.php\/3496586\">content-community-oriented<\/a> <\/span><\/span><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font size=\"2\"><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\"><span><span>(as with Ask Jeeves), <\/span><\/span><span><span>weblogs that have truly useful expertise and information may find <\/span><\/span><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font size=\"2\"><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\"><span><span>themselves <em>more<\/em> <\/span><\/span><span><span>successful in search engine results (and not bunched among irrelevant <\/span><\/span><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font size=\"2\"><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\"><span><span>materials). We summarized the White Paper at the bottom of <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/2003\/10\/04#a313\"><font color=\"black\">this post<\/font><\/a><font color=\"black\">.<\/font>  <\/span><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font size=\"2\"><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\"><span>Perseus <\/span><span>found 66% of weblogs were permanently or temporarily abandoned, with one-quarter <\/span><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">of them being literally &#8220;one-day wonders,&#8221; and only 2.5% updated weekly.  Similarly,  <\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">the <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewinternet.org\/pdfs\/PIP_blogging_data.pdf\"><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">Jan. 2005 Study from Pew<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\"> <\/font><\/span><span><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">notes that:<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span><\/span><span><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">&#8220;Previous work of ours . . . suggests that bloggers can be quite casual <\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">about their online postings, regularly updating material on their blog less <\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">frequently than once a week.&#8221;<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">We should be even more skeptical of the significance of the claim &#8220;one out of six adult <\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font size=\"2\"><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\"><span>Americans <\/span><span>reads <\/span><span>weblogs.&#8221;  First, you have to be an &#8220;internet user&#8221; to be part of the Pew <\/span><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font size=\"2\"><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\"><span>study, but <\/span><span>the threshold for &#8220;use&#8221; is very low &#8212; to wit, &#8220;<em>any<\/em> type of internet use&#8221; in any<\/span><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\"><span>amount. <\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font size=\"2\"><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\"><span><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/dinerdudegray.gif\" alt=\"diner dude gray\" \/><\/span><\/font><\/font><font size=\"2\"><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\"><span> More <\/span><span>important, <\/span><span>the survey respondents were asked &#8220;Do you <em>ever<\/em> use the internet to\u2026\u00a0<\/span><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font size=\"2\"><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\"><span>Read <\/span><span>someone else&#8217;s <\/span><span>web log or blog?&#8221;  Thus, the 16% of respondents who comprise the <\/span><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font size=\"2\"><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\"><span>&#8220;one <\/span><span>in six&#8221; are those who have <em>ever read<\/em> a weblog.  Moreover, the Pew survey cannot tell <\/span><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">us whether the &#8220;blog reader&#8221; <em>intentionally<\/em> went to a weblog (or, for example, got there <\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span><font face=\"Geneva,Arial,Sans-Serif\" size=\"2\">through a Google search), nor how much reading was or is done.
