Last year, The Legal Studies Forum<\/em><\/strong> published “the first effort of<\/font> a United States legal journal to devote an entire issue to poetry.” We<\/font> described that volume, entitled Off the Record<\/font><\/a>: an anthology of poetry<\/em><\/font><\/font> by lawyers<\/em> (28 Legal Studies Forum 2004)<\/a>, at length <\/font><\/font>here<\/font><\/a>. The 700-page<\/font> issue is a milestone and a treasure. This year, LSF<\/em> and its devoted<\/font> editor, West Virginia Law Professor Prof. <\/font>James R. Elkins<\/font><\/a>, have produced<\/font> a spectacular encore — <\/font>Legal Studies Forum<\/font><\/em> <\/font><\/a><\/font>XXIX:1 (2005)<\/font><\/a> — which<\/font> includes about 300 pages of poetry by people with law degrees (very little <\/font>of which is about the law), along with interviews and essays about lawyers<\/font> and poetry. We’ve made no claim that there is a subterranean connection<\/font><\/em><\/p>\n

between poem and lawyer\/poet; what we claim is that knowing<\/font><\/em><\/p>\n

that the poet is a lawyer turns out to be a perfectly good reason to<\/font><\/em><\/p>\n

read poetry, poetry most of us would not otherwise read. And, we <\/font><\/em><\/p>\n

think there is a good case to be made for the proposition that lawyers <\/font><\/em><\/p>\n

turn out to be good poets!<\/font><\/em><\/p>\n
