<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/media-cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/emc2r.gif\" alt=\"eMC2\" \/><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">I was five years old when he died, and&nbsp;have had no&nbsp;professional&nbsp;nor&nbsp;dilettante interest in physics <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">or mathematics.&nbsp; Nonetheless, I&#8217;ve always been&nbsp;very fond of Old Albert and have never quite <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">known why.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Perhaps this&nbsp;quote from&nbsp;Sunday&#8217;s newspaper&nbsp; (Associated Press, April 15, 2005,<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">&#8220;<\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.registerguard.com\/news\/2005\/04\/17\/f3.bz.einstein.0417.html\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" color=\"black\" size=\"2\">100 Years Ago, Einstein Changed Everything<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">,&#8221;) helps explain it:<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT size=\"2\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\">&#8220;<EM>Once you can accept the universe as matter expanding into nothing that is <\/EM><\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT size=\"2\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\"><EM>something, wearing stripes with plaid comes easy<\/EM>.&#8221;<\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">&#8220;einsteinTime&#8221;&nbsp; I can&nbsp;picture it now:&nbsp; Little Tyke David proudly&nbsp;dresses himself one morning in <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">a color-and-design combination that provokes from his mother&nbsp;(<EM>and<\/EM> big sister) <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">that phrase every <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">male&nbsp;in the universe hears,&nbsp;from every significant woman in his life (and quite a <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">few insignificant <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">ones):<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">&#8220;That doesn&#8217;t <EM><A href=\"http:\/\/66.102.7.104\/search?q=cache:teBUfhuW0iYJ:www.wordreference.com\/english\/definition.asp%3Fen%3DGO+%22blend+or+harmonize%22+%2B%22be+the+right+size+or+shape%3B+fit+correctly+or+as+desired%22&amp;hl=en&amp;start=3\">go<\/A><\/EM>!&#8221;&nbsp; You can&#8217;t wear stripes&nbsp;with plaids!&nbsp; And, never mix green <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">with&nbsp;orange!&#8221;<\/FONT><\/DIV><\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">Then, Mama Giacalone&nbsp;probaby added: &#8220;Do you want to look as silly as Albert Einstein?&#8221;&nbsp; Thus, <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">the <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">bond <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">was <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">formed across the ages and the cosmos &#8212; like time, taste is relative.<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">That&nbsp;certainly&nbsp;explains my wearing stripes to visit the <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.kittytours.org\/thatman2\/search.asp?subject=85\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">Einstein Monument<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">&nbsp;in D.C.&nbsp;(1980)&nbsp;&nbsp; &#8220;Einstein head small&#8221;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<FONT size=\"1\">orig photo by A.J. Giacalone<\/FONT> <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/media-cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/gems\/ethicalesq\/EinsteinMem.jpg\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">here<\/FONT><\/A><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\">&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\">&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\">Of course, there is much more to know, respect and like about the complex man chosen by<EM> <\/EM><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\"><EM>Time Magazine<\/EM> as <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.time.com\/time\/time100\/poc\/magazine\/albert_einstein5a.html\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\">Person of the Century<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\"><EM>&nbsp;<\/EM>(by Eric Golden, Jan. 3, 2005) &#8212; famous for his <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\">genius and profundity, his charm and humor.&nbsp; Over the decades, as I have come to know some<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\">very smart people who take themselves far too seriously, I&#8217;ve come to appreciate greatly Einstein&#8217;s <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\">playfulness in public and his willingness to let the world see him being silly.&nbsp; His biographer <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\">Juergen Neffe recently said,&nbsp; &#8220;He was the first global pop star of science at a time when world <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\">stars were first emerging.&#8221;&nbsp;&nbsp; And:<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\">&nbsp;&#8220;He was always fun to be with, always joking. Sometimes when he was supposed <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\">to give a speech he would just play his violin instead.&#8221; (<\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.keralanext.com\/news\/indexread.asp?id=180878\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" color=\"#000000\">keralanext.com<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\">, April 14, 2005)<\/FONT><\/DIV><\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/media-cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/emc2g.gif\" alt=\"eMC2g\" \/>&nbsp; I think Albert would shake his shaggy head at Rolf Sinclair, the stuffy physicist who is <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\">quoted in an&nbsp;<\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.registerguard.com\/news\/2005\/04\/17\/f3.bz.einstein.0417.html\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" color=\"#000000\">AP article<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\"> saying he despises the Einstein <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.kittytours.org\/thatman2\/search.asp?subject=85\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" color=\"#000000\">monument<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\"> in D.C., because &#8220;It makes him <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\">look like one of the Three Stooges reading his horoscope.&#8221;&nbsp;&nbsp; The 12-foot bronze depicts Einstein <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\">gazing at his famous energy formula.&nbsp; Like myself, tourists of all ages <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/media-cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/gems\/ethicalesq\/EinsteinMem.jpg\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" color=\"black\">climb on his lap<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\"> for snapshots <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\">and to peer at the map of the universe that is at his feet.&nbsp; <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">a cool breeze&#8211;<BR>the katydid brims<BR>with energy<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<FONT size=\"1\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; assert that only &#8220;peope of faith&#8221; can have a&nbsp;strong moral<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\">code and sense of social responsibility (see <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/stories\/storyReader$2800\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" color=\"#000000\">my post<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\">, <EM>e.g<\/EM>., on religious law schools), Einstein the <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\">humanist&nbsp;has been an inspiration for me.&nbsp; &nbsp;As <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/cgi-bin\/stories.pl?ACCT=109&amp;STORY=\/www\/story\/04-11-2005\/0003383520&amp;EDATE=\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" color=\"black\">Rabbi Sherwin Wine explains<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\">:<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\"><EM>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
