The lastest edition of the <EM><A href=\"http:\/\/www.law.harvard.edu\/alumni\/bulletin\/2005\/spring\/\"><FONT color=\"black\">Harvard Law Bulletin<\/FONT><\/A><\/EM> (Spring 2005) features a <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">cover that reads &#8220;Giving Back: Harvard Law School wants all lawyers to get involved in <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">public service.&#8221;&nbsp;&nbsp; I recommend &#8220;<\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.law.harvard.edu\/alumni\/bulletin\/2005\/spring\/feature_1-fulltext.html\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\">Sowing the seeds<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\"> of public service at HLS&#8221;, as well as <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><A href=\"http:\/\/www.law.harvard.edu\/alumni\/bulletin\/2005\/spring\/feature_2-fulltext.html\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">Requirement connects law students to the practice of public service<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">, which &nbsp;describe <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">the HLS pro bono requirement, its purpose,&nbsp;and the flexible ways it can be fulfilled.&nbsp; The <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">program, which apparently helps attract&nbsp;some of the very best students, hopes to make <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">even the most skeptical student see how fulfilling it can be to&nbsp;make public service a part <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">of your life (by following your bliss).&nbsp;&nbsp;There are some good anecdotes.<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/tinycheck.gif\" alt=\"tiny check\" \/>&nbsp; I was surprised to read about the comprehensiveness of the<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">HLS <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.law.harvard.edu\/students\/finaid\/lipp\/\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">Low Income Protection Plan<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\"> &#8212; as you can see from <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><A href=\"http:\/\/www.law.harvard.edu\/students\/finaid\/lipp\/scale.php\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" color=\"black\" size=\"2\">this chart<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" color=\"black\" size=\"2\">, it&nbsp;offers loan help to&nbsp;any alumnus who makes less <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" color=\"black\" size=\"2\">than $87,000 and still has student loan debt (expecting an <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" color=\"black\" size=\"2\">annual contribution of $0 toward loan payments, if you make <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT size=\"2\"><FONT color=\"black\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\">$37,000 or less).&nbsp; A<\/FONT><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\"><EM>ny<\/EM> fulltime job for a <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\">non-profit, governmental, <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\"><FONT color=\"black\" size=\"2\">or educational entity is <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.law.harvard.edu\/students\/finaid\/lipp\/eligibility.php\"><FONT color=\"black\" size=\"2\">eligible<\/FONT><\/A><FONT size=\"2\"><FONT color=\"black\"> for<\/FONT> the program <EM>and<\/EM> &#8212;&nbsp;this <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">will make <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.myshingle.com\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" color=\"black\" size=\"2\">Carolyn<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">&#8216;s heart beat fast &#8212;&nbsp;so are&nbsp;law-related jobs in <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">the private sector (like at small law firms or firms in locations that <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">are less desirable geographically).&nbsp;&nbsp; What a difference this would <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">have made for&nbsp;<EM>me<\/EM> back in 1976!<\/FONT><\/DIV><\/BLOCKQUOTE><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/tinycheck.gif\" alt=\"tiny check\" \/>&nbsp; The <SPAN><A href=\"http:\/\/www.law.harvard.edu\/alumni\/bulletin\/2005\/spring\/ask_main.html\">Ask the Professor<\/A> feature of the Spring 2005 edition of the&nbsp;<EM>Harvard Law <\/EM><\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\"><SPAN><EM>Bulletin<\/EM> <\/SPAN><\/FONT><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\"><SPAN>asked HLS Professor David Barron, an expert on local government law, to explain <\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\"><SPAN>what&#8217;s at stake in the U.S. Supreme Court&#8217;s pending case,<EM> Kelo v. City of New London<\/EM>, and <\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\"><SPAN>what he thinks the Court should do.&nbsp; Here&#8217;s part of&nbsp;Prof. Barron&#8217;s reply:<\/SPAN><SPAN>&nbsp;<\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV><SPAN><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\">&#8220;By affirming New London&#8217;s exercise of the power of eminent domain on <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><SPAN><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\">the ground that it constitutes a legitimate land-use planning effort, the Court <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><SPAN><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\">would protect private property rights and provide a check against cities using <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><SPAN><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\">takings as simply a fiscal tool.
