{"id":3665,"date":"2005-03-07T17:32:00","date_gmt":"2005-03-07T21:32:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/formerlyknownas\/2005\/03\/07\/buzzing-under-the-hay\/"},"modified":"2011-08-05T14:57:55","modified_gmt":"2011-08-05T18:57:55","slug":"buzzing-under-the-hay","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/2005\/03\/07\/buzzing-under-the-hay\/","title":{"rendered":"buzzing under the hay"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><font face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"> <\/font><\/p>\n<p><em><strong><em><font face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/phoneold.jpg\" alt=\"phone old\" \/>  potluck<\/font><\/em><\/strong><\/em><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><em> &#8212; our cell phone blues<\/em>:<\/font><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/tinycheck.gif\" alt=\"tiny check\" \/>    U.S. politicians don&#8217;t have the courage to ban a clearly dangerous <\/font><font size=\"2\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">activity, that is becoming <\/font><font face=\"Times New Roman\">an entitlement for many drivers (<\/font><\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2005\/03\/03\/technology\/circuits\/03laws.html?ei=5090&amp;en=386e3a5f4c51e726&amp;ex=1267592400&amp;partner=rssuserland&amp;pagewanted=print&amp;position=\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><font size=\"2\"><em>NYT<\/em> article<\/font><\/font><\/a><font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">, March 3, 2005).  <\/font><font size=\"2\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">They also continue with the phony notion<\/font><font face=\"Times New Roman\"> (first discussed by me in March 2000 <\/font><\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/files\/2008\/06\/prairielawcellphone.jpg\"><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">here<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">), that hands-free <\/font><font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">is safer than hand-up cellphoning. (<em>ethicalEsq<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/2003\/09\/11#a260\"><font color=\"#000000\">weighs in<\/font><\/a>)<\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\"><font face=\"Arial\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/tinycheck.gif\" alt=\"tiny check\" \/>     Instead, hands-free car phoning is just as distracting (it&#8217;s the distraction that&#8217;s <\/font><font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">the problem!) and allows the irresponsible to find yet more distracting activities <\/font><font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">to perform while driving. (see <em>NYT<\/em>, &#8220;For Drivers, a <\/font><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2005\/03\/03\/technology\/circuits\/03cell.html?ei=5090&amp;en=ab8bb028fbe7182c&amp;ex=1267506000&amp;partner=rssuserland&amp;pagewanted=print&amp;position=\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">Traffic Jam of Distractions<\/font><\/a><font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">, <\/font><font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\">March 3, 2005)<\/font><\/font><\/font><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"2\"> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/monkeycellphonesmall.gif\" alt=\"monkey cellphone small\" \/> Three years after the ban on hand-held cells phones started in New York, <\/font><font size=\"2\"><font face=\"Times New Roman\">scofflaws are everywhere;
