On March 4, <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\">I saw Warner and three other women being interviewed <FONT color=\"black\">on <\/FONT><\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Nightline\/\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\" color=\"black\">Nightline<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\" color=\"black\">&nbsp;&#8220;about the daily challenges <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\" color=\"black\">mothers face in America.&#8221;&nbsp; I appreciate how hard it is to be a mother<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\"><FONT color=\"black\">in today&#8217;s Western Civilization &#8212; and I know that fathers<\/FONT> need to do a lot more parenting. But, I&#8217;m <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\">also certain&nbsp;that much of the pressure is self-imposed.&nbsp; Unless you merely want to prepare your<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\">children to live a life even more pressurized than your own &#8212; even more focused on outward signs<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\">of &#8220;success&#8221; and &#8220;achievement&#8221;&nbsp;&#8212; it&#8217;s time to recheck your values, realign your priorities, and<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\">make realistic assessments about what being a good parents requires.&nbsp; Then, you and your co-<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\">parent&nbsp;need to&nbsp;work together to provide your kids a&nbsp;physical and emotional safety-net, but<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\">not a golden staircase (or parachute).&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/journalistflip.gif\" alt=\"journalist f\" \/> &nbsp;Carl Strock, the crusty columnist for the (Schenectady, <FONT color=\"black\">NY) <EM><A href=\"http:\/\/www.dailygazette.com \"><FONT color=\"black\">Daily Gazette<\/FONT><\/A><\/EM><\/FONT><FONT color=\"black\">&nbsp;lends<\/FONT> his&nbsp;<\/FONT> <\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\">support today to a bill [A 3842] by Schenectady&#8217;s Republican Assemblyman James Tedisco,<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\">which would require that <A href=\"http:\/\/www.schenectadyny.info\/cgi-bin\/Blah\/Blah.pl?b=cc,m=1110106805\">snow and ice&nbsp;be removed from the roof<\/A> of one&#8217;s vehicle before hitting<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\">the road.&nbsp;(article&nbsp;&amp; <FONT color=\"black\">comments, <\/FONT><\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.schenectadyny.info\/cgi-bin\/Blah\/Blah.pl?b=cc,m=1110106805\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\" color=\"black\">here<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\" color=\"black\">)&nbsp;&nbsp;Tedisco has introduced similar bills in other sessions, which <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\" color=\"black\">have not been acted upon (as <FONT color=\"black\">described <\/FONT><\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/216.239.63.104\/search?q=cache:x7uDXEaVNlYJ:www.timesunion.com\/AspStories\/story.asp%3Fcategory%3DSTATE%26storyID%3D188024%26BCCode%3D%26newsdate%3D11\/10\/2003+Tedisco++%2Bsnow+%2Bremove&amp;hl=en&amp;start=11\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\"><FONT color=\"black\">h<\/FONT><\/A><A href=\"http:\/\/216.239.63.104\/search?q=cache:x7uDXEaVNlYJ:www.timesunion.com\/AspStories\/story.asp%3Fcategory%3DSTATE%26storyID%3D188024%26BCCode%3D%26newsdate%3D11\/10\/2003+Tedisco++%2Bsnow+%2Bremove&amp;hl=en&amp;start=11\"><FONT color=\"black\">ere<\/FONT><\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\"><FONT color=\"black\"><FONT color=\"black\">).<\/FONT>&nbsp;&nbsp; Strock<\/FONT> thinks the fines &#8212; $150 to $850 for passenger<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\">vehicles and $450 to $1250 for commercial ones &#8212; should be doubled: &#8220;One fine for the snow and<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\">one for the knuckleheadedness.&#8221;&nbsp; He explains:<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\">&#8220;What do you think is happening to me behind you when your&#8217;e&nbsp; <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\">cruising down the road with half a foot of snow blowing off your<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\">roof into my face?&nbsp; Do you think I&#8217;m humming White Christmas<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\">and welcoming the white out?&#8221;<\/FONT><\/DIV><\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\">Naturally, libertarians will have a knee-jerk reaction against this law, but I&#8217;ve seen far too many hunks<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\">of ice and snow fall off car roofs (and now, super-SUVs much taller than most vehicles), and have<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\">had enough snow blown onto my windshield, to know that such drivers are creating an unnecessary<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\">danger for others (often while on their cellphones, too &#8212; same kind of irresponsibility). I&#8217;m with Carl.<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/Strock.jpg\" alt=\"strock\" \/>&nbsp; In today&#8217;s column, Strock also notes the &#8220;<A href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2005\/03\/03\/news\/newsmakers\/martha_photo\/\">little media flap<\/A>&#8221; about the&nbsp; <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\">composite <EM>Newsweek<\/EM>&nbsp;&nbsp;cover of Martha Stewart.&nbsp; He makes this disclaimer<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\">about his own <A href=\"http:\/\/www.schenectadyny.info\/cgi-bin\/Blah\/Blah.pl?b=cc,m=1110106805\"><FONT color=\"black\">column-topping photo<\/FONT><\/A>:<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\">&#8220;Not wishing to be the subject of any scandal myself, I<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\">confess that it&#8217;s actually a composite, like <EM>Newsweek<\/EM>&#8216;s.<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\">The bowtie is mine, but the face, including the jowls,<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\">belongs to a model who agreed to pose on the condition<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\">that the top of his head not be shown because he has a<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\">rare and particularly unslightly scalp condition.&#8221;<\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\">Any webloggers want to make similar confessions?&nbsp; The time is right.<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\">&nbsp;<\/DIV><\/BLOCKQUOTE><\/DIV><br \/>\n<P><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/snowpileshovel.gif\" alt=\"snow pile\" \/>&nbsp; It&#8217;s hard to say who are the most annoying:&nbsp;individual &#8220;word puritans,&#8221; scandalized by<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\">every expletive on the airwaves; private media concerns who give in to such complaints; <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\">or our civil &#8220;servants&#8221; (<EM>i.e<\/EM>., F.C.C.) wasting resources pandering to the first group and policing<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\">the second.&nbsp; The recent example from Buffalo, NY, station WKBW-TV, which dropped the <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\">Niagara Frontier Radio Reading Service for the Blind&#8217;s audio signal from its SAP&nbsp;format about <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\">three weeks ago:<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\">&nbsp;&#8220;after a listener complained about an off-color word being read.&nbsp; Apparently, the <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\">word was from author Tom Wolfe&#8217;s latest novel, &#8220;<EM>I Am Charlotte Simmons.<\/EM>&#8221;&nbsp; Now, <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\">after weeks of negotiations, Channel 7 is bringing the service back on a limited basis, <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\">cutting out all programming between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m., when adult material may be <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\">read.&#8221;&nbsp;&nbsp;
