<\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.hsa-haiku.org\/frogpond.htm\"><EM><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\">frogpond<\/FONT><\/EM><\/A><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\"><EM>, <\/EM>the Haiku Society of America&#8217;s journal,<EM>&nbsp;<\/EM><\/FONT><\/FONT><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">just plopped <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"2\">onto my desk.&nbsp; There was a lot of disappointment <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/phoneold.jpg\" alt=\"phone old\" \/><\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT size=\"2\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\">back in December, when the Washington Supreme Court issued its&nbsp;<\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.courts.wa.gov\/opinions\/?fa=opinions.opindisp&amp;docid=748390MAJ\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" color=\"#000000\">silly decision<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" size=\"3\"> <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\">criminalizing a <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" color=\"#000000\"><A href=\"http:\/\/www.mayitpleasethecourt.net\/journal.asp?blogid=566\">parent&#8217;s eavesdropping<\/A><\/FONT><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\"> on a minor child&#8217;s telephone conversation.<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\">(see, <EM>e.g.,<\/EM> <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.mayitpleasethecourt.net\/journal.asp?blogid=566\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" color=\"#000000\">J. Craig Williams<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\">, <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/2004\/12\/12#a2906\"><EM><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" color=\"black\">f\/k\/a<\/FONT><\/EM><\/A><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\">, <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.freep.com\/sports\/albom\/mitch12e_20041212.htm\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" color=\"#000000\">Mitch Albom<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\">; <EM>contra<\/EM>: <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/federalism.typepad.com\/crime_federalism\/2004\/12\/the_mom_cant_sp.html\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\" color=\"#000000\">Fed84<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\">).&nbsp; The high Court should&nbsp;<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\">have&nbsp;decided that a minor child has no expectation of privacy vis-a-vis a parent, and was<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\">outside the Washington eavesdropping statute.&nbsp; Instead, <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\">the Washington State legislature <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\">has to act in order to decriminalize parents doing <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\">what parents should do.&nbsp;&nbsp;A <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/seattletimes.nwsource.com\/html\/localnews\/2002169073_parents03m.html\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\"><EM>Seattle Times<\/EM> article<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\"> <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\">today tells of two bills filed to <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\">fix the problem.&nbsp; One would merely let parents eavesdrop without <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\">committing <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\">a crime, the other would also allow the information gained to be used as evidence.<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<UL><br \/>\n<LI><br \/>\n<DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\">A local ACLU spokesperson said they support the former but not the <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\">later bill.&nbsp; Some legislators,&nbsp;including the Judicial Committee chairwoman, <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\">are unhappy with depriving minors of their so-called right to privacy without <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\">meeting a &#8220;very high burden.&#8221;&nbsp; That&#8217;s the kind of knee-jerk rights-talk that<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\">gives liberals a bad name.&nbsp; And, makes a lot of them ineffective parents.<\/FONT><\/DIV><\/DIV><br \/>\n<LI><br \/>\n<DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\">The article points out that &#8220;Washington is one of 11 states that requires <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\">consent from all parties involved before a conversation may be intercepted <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\">or recorded. The other states are California, Delaware, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\">Massachusetts, Michigan, Montana, New Hampshire and Pennsylvania.&#8221;<\/FONT><\/DIV><\/DIV><\/DIV><br \/>\n<LI><br \/>\n<DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\">Seattle <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/seattlepi.nwsource.com\/jamieson\/210998_robert07.html\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\" color=\"black\"><EM>Post-Intelligencer<\/EM> columnist<\/FONT><\/A><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\"> Robert L. <A href=\"http:\/\/commonscold.typepad.com\/\"><FONT color=\"black\">Monica Bay<\/FONT><\/A> has again sicced her <A href=\"http:\/\/commonscold.typepad.com\/commonscold\/2005\/02\/fine_whine_.html\">pet-peeve pooch<\/A> on a couple of my own favorite<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\">complaints &#8212; this time, using <EM>un-explained acronyms<\/EM> and <EM>checking email<\/EM> during an in-person <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\">conversation.&nbsp; <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\">Thanks, <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\">Mon\/Mom!&nbsp; Like many other annoying traits that we see too often on<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\">this planet in the Third Millennium, the cause seems to be the&nbsp;belief that so many people have<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\">that they (and what goes on in their own minds) are at the very center of everyone else&#8217;s <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\">universe.<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<UL><br \/>\n<LI><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\"><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\">Which reminds me:&nbsp; Why do so many newspaper websites fail to say where &#8212; in what <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\">City and\/or <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\">State &#8212; the newspaper is published?&nbsp;<\/FONT><\/DIV><\/FONT><\/LI><\/UL><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><\/FONT><\/BLOCKQUOTE><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On one of those eerie, northeast, all-gray, winter days (with the tv weather weenies trying to explain why last night&#8217;s forecasted foot of snow turned into half an inch), &nbsp;I am very pleased that the newest edition of&nbsp;
