“tinyredcheck” Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legacy has many aspects.  His hope for a color-blind <\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/DIV>

and truly integrated America truly inspires me.  But, I want to point out the <\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
courage it took to take the stances he took, when and where he took them.  <\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
Rev. King understood — unlike many who claim to be engaged in civil disobedience <\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
today (see <\/FONT>our post<\/FONT><\/A>) —  that <\/FONT>Civil Disobedience<\/FONT><\/STRONG><\/A> entails “Risking punishment, such as <\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
violent retaliatory acts or imprisonment” in an attempt to bring about changes in the <\/SPAN><\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
law.”  And, unlike those “<\/FONT>slacktivists<\/FONT><\/A>” who feel self-righteous making <\/FONT>meaningless<\/FONT><\/A> <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
gestures <\/FONT>Rev. King knew that meaningful change takes <\/FONT><\/SPAN><\/SPAN><\/FONT>a lifelong commitment of time <\/SPAN><\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
and energy and sacrifice.  <\/SPAN><\/SPAN><\/FONT><\/DIV>
\n
