{"id":3547,"date":"2005-01-16T14:34:50","date_gmt":"2005-01-16T18:34:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/formerlyknownas\/2005\/01\/16\/inflected-reiteration-and-ad-"},"modified":"2011-08-05T14:58:03","modified_gmt":"2011-08-05T18:58:03","slug":"inflected-reiteration-and-ad-ads","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/2005\/01\/16\/inflected-reiteration-and-ad-ads\/","title":{"rendered":"inflected reiteration (and ad ads)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name='a3102'><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\"><FONT size=\"3\">A<\/FONT><FONT size=\"2\"> pet peeve around here is the deterioration in the ability of words <\/FONT><\/FONT><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\">to actually <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\">communicate a shared meaning.&nbsp;&nbsp; One annoying&nbsp;symptom is the <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\">increasing use of what<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\">I call <EM>inflected reiteration<\/EM> to help the listener understand <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\">the speaker&#8217;s meaning.&nbsp; <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\">Examples:&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\">&#8220;She&#8217;s his&nbsp;<\/FONT><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\"><EM>girlfriend<\/EM> girlfriend.&#8221;&nbsp; &#8220;We&#8217;ll, it&#8217;s not <EM>work<\/EM> work, but .. .&#8221;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\">&#8220;That movie was <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\"><EM>bad<\/EM> bad.&#8221;&nbsp;&nbsp; Or, &#8220;Those <\/FONT><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\">aren&#8217;t <EM>fact<\/EM> facts.&#8221;&nbsp; <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><FONT face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\"><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" align=\"left\"><A href=\"mailto:jcraigwms at wlf-law.com\"><FONT size=\"2\">J. Craig Williams&nbsp;<\/FONT><\/A><FONT size=\"2\">of <EM>May It Please the Court<\/EM> may be adding&nbsp;&#8220;It&#8217;s an <EM>ad<\/EM> ad&#8221; to this <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" align=\"left\"><FONT size=\"2\">baneful list, with his recent <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.mayitpleasethecourt.net\/journal.asp?blogid=648\"><FONT size=\"2\">posting<\/FONT><\/A><FONT size=\"2\"> (Jan. 15, 2005), where he asks &#8220;<\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.mayitpleasethecourt.net\/journal\/journal_comments.asp?JournalID=648&amp;PagePosition=&amp;blogType=blogMain\"><FONT size=\"2\">Are blogs advertising?<\/FONT><\/A><FONT size=\"2\">&#8221; <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" align=\"left\"><FONT size=\"2\">and answers in the affirmative (that is:&nbsp;&#8220;<EM>yes<\/EM> yes&#8221;).&nbsp; <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" align=\"left\"><FONT size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" align=\"left\"><FONT size=\"2\">Craig&#8217;s reasoning includes observations such as:<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<UL><br \/>\n<LI><br \/>\n<DIV align=\"left\"><FONT size=\"2\"><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" align=\"left\"><FONT size=\"2\">&#8220;What about MIPTC? Yes, it provides a vehicle for people to get to know <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" align=\"left\"><FONT size=\"2\">me without having to meet me, and I suspect under that definition qualifies <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" align=\"left\"><FONT size=\"2\">as advertising. Somewhat suprisingly it has resulted in clients.&#8221; <\/FONT><\/DIV><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<LI><br \/>\n<DIV align=\"left\"><FONT size=\"2\"><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" align=\"left\">&#8220;Subscriptions and advertising pay for the people that bring us news and<br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" align=\"left\"><FONT size=\"2\">opinion.&#8221;<\/FONT><\/DIV><\/DIV><\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<LI><br \/>\n<DIV align=\"left\"><FONT size=\"2\"><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" align=\"left\"><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" align=\"left\">&#8220;It would be difficult to identify an altruistic blog, with no ax to grind. I&#8217;m not<br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" align=\"left\"><FONT size=\"2\">sure I could.&#8221; <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV><\/DIV><\/DIV><\/DIV><\/LI><\/UL><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" align=\"left\"><FONT size=\"2\">With all due respect to my highly-respected web-colleague, none of the above makes&nbsp;&nbsp; <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/thesaurus.gif\" alt=\"thesaurus\" \/>&nbsp;<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" align=\"left\"><FONT size=\"2\">a weblog&nbsp; <\/FONT><FONT size=\"2\">&#8220;<EM>advertising<\/EM> advertising&#8221; [unless, perhaps,&nbsp;the weblog is&nbsp;built, written&nbsp;and <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" align=\"left\"><FONT size=\"2\">maintained by <\/FONT><A href=\"img\" name=\"2625\" \/>&gt;<FONT size=\"2\">someone<\/FONT><\/A><FONT size=\"2\"> <\/FONT><FONT size=\"2\">other than the Editor-Proprietor].&nbsp; Like a good <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.bartleby.com\/61\/6\/T0160600.html\"><FONT size=\"2\">thesaurus<\/FONT><\/A><FONT size=\"2\">, a <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" align=\"left\"><FONT size=\"2\">good lawyer or writer helps advance <\/FONT><FONT size=\"2\">communication by using words precisely &#8212; which <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" align=\"left\"><FONT size=\"2\">includes recognizing that some <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.bartleby.com\/61\/94\/S0969400.html\"><FONT size=\"2\">synonyms<\/FONT><\/A><FONT size=\"2\"> have <\/FONT><FONT size=\"2\">the same meaning in certain <\/FONT><FONT size=\"2\">contexts <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" align=\"left\"><FONT size=\"2\">but not others.&nbsp; [That &#8220;all B&nbsp;is A&#8221;&nbsp;rarely means that&nbsp;&#8220;all A is B.&#8221;] <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" align=\"left\"><FONT face=\"Arial\" size=\"2\"><\/FONT>&nbsp;<\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" align=\"left\"><FONT size=\"2\">Calling weblogs advertising can only confuse the meaning of both terms.&nbsp; As&nbsp;viewed <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" align=\"left\"><FONT size=\"2\">by Craig <\/FONT><FONT size=\"2\">in his post, I believe weblogs should more precisely be&nbsp;deemed <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.bartleby.com\/61\/43\/P0644300.html\"><FONT size=\"2\">publicity<\/FONT><\/A><FONT size=\"2\">, or&nbsp;<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" align=\"left\"><A href=\"http:\/\/www.bartleby.com\/61\/8\/S0240800.html\"><FONT size=\"2\">self-promotion<\/FONT><\/A><FONT size=\"2\">,&nbsp;or&nbsp;<\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.bartleby.com\/61\/53\/P0645300.html\"><FONT size=\"2\">public relations<\/FONT><\/A><FONT size=\"2\">.&nbsp; They are not &#8220;<\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.bartleby.com\/61\/57\/A0105700.html\"><FONT size=\"2\">advertising<\/FONT><\/A><FONT size=\"2\">&#8221; as the terms is commonly <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" align=\"left\"><FONT size=\"2\">used, and &nbsp;I can see nothing <\/FONT><FONT size=\"2\">to gain from blurring the concepts.&nbsp; We don&#8217;t want to have <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" align=\"left\"><FONT size=\"2\">to&nbsp;explain &#8220;Well, Ms. Bar Counsel, <\/FONT><FONT size=\"2\">my weblog <EM>is<\/EM> advertising according to <EM>MIPTC<\/EM>, but it&#8217;s not <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" align=\"left\"><A href=\"http:\/\/www.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Advertising\"><FONT color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\"><EM>advertising<\/EM><\/FONT><\/A><FONT size=\"2\"> <\/FONT><A href=\"http:\/\/www.bartleby.com\/61\/57\/A0105700.html\"><FONT color=\"#000000\" size=\"2\">advertising<\/FONT><\/A><FONT size=\"2\">.&#8221;&nbsp; As Wikipedia <\/FONT><FONT size=\"2\">succinctly <\/FONT><A href=\"Wikipedia\"><FONT size=\"2\">says<\/FONT><\/A><FONT size=\"2\">: <STRONG>&#8220;<\/STRONG><EM>Advertising<\/EM> is the paid promotion <\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" align=\"left\"><FONT size=\"2\">of goods, services, companies and ideas, by <\/FONT><FONT size=\"2\">an identified sponsor.&#8221;&nbsp; Craig&#8217;s definition would<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" align=\"left\"><FONT size=\"2\">make&nbsp;most of the words&nbsp;ever written or spoken &#8220;advertising.&#8221;<\/FONT><\/DIV><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" align=\"left\"><br \/>\n<DIV dir=\"ltr\" align=\"left\"><FONT size=\"2\"><FONT face=\"Times New Roman,Times,Serif\"><EM><STRONG><FONT color=\"red\">update<\/FONT><\/STRONG><\/EM> (June 9, 2005&nbsp;11 PM):&nbsp;
