{"id":10234,"date":"2008-11-02T09:31:39","date_gmt":"2008-11-02T14:31:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/?p=10234"},"modified":"2011-08-05T14:53:17","modified_gmt":"2011-08-05T18:53:17","slug":"day-of-the-dead-lets-us-remember-with-a-smile-and-a-sigh","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/2008\/11\/02\/day-of-the-dead-lets-us-remember-with-a-smile-and-a-sigh\/","title":{"rendered":"Day of the Dead lets us remember with a smile and a sigh"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.diadelosmuertos.us\/about\/ladislao-loera\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/files\/2007\/10\/trescalaveras.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a> .. <strong><em>W<\/em><\/strong>e&#8217;ve featured the Mexican feast of the Day of the Dead &#8212; <em><a href=\"http:\/\/diadelosmuertos.us\/article\/day-of-the-dead\">Dia de Los Muertos<\/a><\/em> &#8212; a few times here at <em>f\/k\/a<\/em>.\u00a0 It is celebrated on November 2nd (in connection with remembrance November 1st of children who have died, on <em>Dia de Los Angelitos<\/em>).\u00a0 The Day of the Dead commingles Roman Catholic devotion with Pre-Hispanic traditions and beliefs. As we <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/2007\/11\/02\/death-schmeath-and-funeral-schmuneral\/\">said last year<\/a>, quoting graphic artist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.diadelosmuertos.us\/ladislao_loera.htm\">Ladislao Loera<\/a> (whose artwork graces this post):<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.diadelosmuertos.us\/about\/ladislao-loera\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/ethicalesq\/diabloLoeraN.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"30\" height=\"54\" \/><\/a> \u201cPictures of the deceased are placed on Dia de los Muertos altars with their favorite food and drink. Candles to light their way home, and soap and water to freshen-up after their long trip back are also often placed on altars. Trinkets they were fond of, symbols they would understand, and gifts are left to communicate to them that they are always in the hearts of those they left behind, and that they are still part of the family even though they aren\u2019t physically with us any longer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This approach to death seems far healthier than the fearful ways in which Euro-centric peoples relate to death and the afterlife. You can learn more about the feast at &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dayofthedead.com\/\">Day of the Dead in Mexico<\/a>,&#8221; which has pictures, recipes, poems and much more.
