(see <a href=\"http:\/\/capitalnews9.com\/content\/top_stories\/124845\/father-indicted-on-murder-charge-as-son-laid-to-rest\/Default.aspx\">CapitalNews9<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;padding-left: 30px\">That same day, almost a thousand miles away in the thriving, rapidly growing little <a href=\"http:\/\/www.city-data.com\/city\/Troy-Missouri.html\">City of Troy, Missouri<\/a>, 6-week-old Hannah Edwards sustained severe brain damage after being struck in the head and shaken by her mother&#8217;s boyfriend, Ronald I. Schupmann, 23, who was not her biological father. (See the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stltoday.com\/stltoday\/news\/stories.nsf\/stcharles\/story\/BB8EBE3A01770702862574D40014B603?OpenDocument\"><em>St. Louis Post-Dispatch<\/em><\/a>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;padding-left: 60px\">Hannah died on Friday, September 26, the same day that little Matthew Thomas was buried and his father (who was recently unemployed and depressed) was indicted for murder, in Troy, NY.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong> <\/strong><\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.health.state.ny.us\/nysdoh\/consumer\/sbs\/images\/sbs_poster_s.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.health.state.ny.us\/nysdoh\/consumer\/sbs\/images\/sbs_poster_s.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"133\" height=\"105\" \/><\/a><em><strong> F<\/strong><\/em>or quite a few months, I&#8217;ve been wanting to write about a terrible trend I&#8217;ve noticed here in the New York Capital Region the past few years: Although we are a relatively small Metro area, every month or so a grown man is in the news for killing a baby (usually his own or his girlfriend&#8217;s).\u00a0 The men are most often in their early to mid- 20&#8217;s. \u00a0 They shake, punch or throw the child &#8212; usually because the baby is crying inconsolably. Their victims are not even toddlers yet, and often just a few months old.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m finally writing this post, because the Schenectady <em>Sunday Gazette<\/em> featured the article &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailygazette.com\/news\/2008\/oct\/19\/1019_shakenbaby\/\">Shaken baby deaths persist: Problem is all too common<\/a>&#8221;  (by Jill Bryce, October 19, 2008) on the front page of the local news section.\u00a0 From the article and additional research, I&#8217;ve learn that about 80% of the perpetrators of Shaken Baby Syndrome or Abusive Head Trauma to young children are male.\u00a0 In addition:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/files\/2008\/10\/baby_bottom.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-10179\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/files\/2008\/10\/baby_bottom.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"71\" height=\"54\" \/><\/a> &#8220;The abuser is usually the baby\u2019s father or the mother\u2019s boyfriend. Female perpetrators tend to be a caregiver other than the biological mother.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\"><em>W<\/em>hen Googling \/<em>Troy murder infant father<\/em>\/ yesterday, to locate the recent case described above from the nearby city of Troy, NY (find more coverage of it <a href=\"http:\/\/www.troyrecord.com\/site\/news.cfm?newsid=20136324&amp;BRD=1170&amp;PAG=461&amp;dept_id=7021&amp;rfi=6\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/timesunion.com\/AspStories\/story.asp?storyID=724463&amp;category=ALBANY&amp;BCCode=&amp;newsdate=9\/28\/2008\">here<\/a>), I discovered the strange coincidence of baby Hannah&#8217;s death the same week as Matthew&#8217;s in the very-different city of Troy, Missouri.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dontshake.org\/\">National Center on Shaken Baby Syndrome<\/a>, SBS\/AHT (shaken baby syndrome\/abusive head trauma) is a term used to describe the constellation of signs and symptoms resulting from violent shaking or shaking and impacting of the head of an infant or small child.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Often, perpetrators shake an infant or child out of frustration or anger. This most often occurs when the baby won&#8217;t stop crying. Other triggering events include toilet training difficulties and feeding problems.<\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shakenbabycoalition.org\/\">Shaken Baby Coalition<\/a> says: &#8220;In America last year, approximately 1,200 &#8211; 1,400 children were shaken for whom treatment was sought. Of these tiny victims, 25 -30% died as a result of their injuries. The rest will have lifelong complications.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"www.shakenbabycoalition.org\">Perpetrator Profile<\/a>: <span style=\"font-family: Arial;font-size: x-small\"><span style=\"color: #282116\">Average age of perpetrator 22 years;           75% male; 81% had no history of child abuse; 75% had no history of           substance abuse; 50% were natural parents of the victims; 37% biological           father; 21% boyfriends of the mother; 17% female child care providers;           12% mothers; 13% other <\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.preventfutureabuse.org\/images\/Statistics.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.preventfutureabuse.org\/images\/Statistics.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"49\" height=\"58\" \/><\/a> It&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.preventfutureabuse.org\/Shaken_Baby_Statistics.htm\">estimated<\/a> that &#8220;Twenty-five (25%) to fifty (50%) percent of Americans <em>do not understand the danger of shaking a baby<\/em>, nor do they realize the possible long-term consequences.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We haven&#8217;t located more-recent statistics, but a 2003 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dontshake.org\/sbs.php?topNavID=3&amp;subNavID=27&amp;navID=94\">North Carolina study<\/a> estimated that about 300 babies died in this country from SBS or non-accidental head trauma in 2002. In 1997, the FBI <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/US\/9706\/27\/killed.babies\/index.html\">reported<\/a> that about 5 babies a week are killed in the USA.\u00a0 In his 1998 &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.infanticide.org\/history.htm\">History of Infanticide<\/a>,&#8221; Dr. Larry S. Milne presents some pretty dismal statistics about infanticide in the United States (emphasis added):<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;font-size: x-small\"><em>Statistically, the United States ranks high on the list     of countries whose inhabitants kill their children<\/em>. For infants under the age of one year,     the American homicide rate is 11th in the world, while <em>for ages one through four it is 1st<\/em> and for ages five through fourteen it is fourth. From 1968 to 1975, infanticide of all     ages accounted for almost 3.2% of all reported homicides in the United States. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;font-size: x-small\">The 1980&#8217;s followed similar trends. Whereby overall     homicide rates were decreasing in the United States, the rate at which parents were     killing their children was increasing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right\">(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ccbh.net\/ccbh\/export\/sites\/default\/CCBH\/images\/NewImages\/shaken_baby.jpg\">full poster<\/a>) <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/files\/2008\/10\/shaken_baby_2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-10178\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/files\/2008\/10\/shaken_baby_2-300x210.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"107\" height=\"74\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The <em>f\/k\/a<\/em> Gang can&#8217;t offer much direct guidance on this topic.\u00a0\u00a0 In a decade representing children at Family Court, your Editor saw many young males (and some females) accused or capable of shaking or assaulting a baby.\u00a0 Despite the fact that the incidence of SBS\/AHT appears higher among the poor and less educated population, it can and does happen throughout our society, affecting every socio-economic and demographic group, across the nation.\u00a0 We surely need much more vigilance on the part of family members, discretion as to who is left to care for a baby, and education for young parents and their paramours.\u00a0 Dr. Rudy Nydegger, a clinical psychologist in Schenectady, told the <em>Gazette<\/em> that the perpetrator often has very little knowledge of how to care for a child.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">\u201cIt\u2019s terribly important to ensure that people in charge of a child know what to do\u201d when a baby is crying inconsolably.\u00a0 Caregivers need to ask for help.<\/p>\n<p>Here are links to resources that interested and affected persons and organizations might use to help prevent, understand, and deal with the fatal (or serious, but less severe) effects of non-accidental assaults on &#8220;our&#8221; from Cuyahoga County (Ohio), which includes a 35-minute video clip.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Folks in the criminal defense bar might want to consult the &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sbsdefense.com\/\">Shaken Baby Syndrome Defense<\/a>&#8221; website.<\/li>\n<li>Thomas at the Library of Congress has information on H.R. 2052, the proposed <a href=\"http:\/\/thomas.loc.gov\/cgi-bin\/bdquery\/z?d110:HR02052:|\/bss\/110search.html|\">Shaken Baby Syndrome Prevention Act<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/files\/2008\/10\/shaken_baby.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-10180\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ethicalesq\/files\/2008\/10\/shaken_baby-300x210.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"103\" height=\"72\" \/><\/a> Parents, siblings and other relatives of SBS victims face a special kind of grief.\u00a0 My heart goes out to them.\u00a0 They can find some <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dontshake.org\/sbs.php?topNavID=3&amp;subNavID=29&amp;navID=128\">help and comfort<\/a> from the National Center on SBS, and on the <a href=\"http:\/\/shakenbaby.org\/familysupport\/\">Family Support<\/a> page of ShakenBaby.org.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px\"><em>I<\/em>n 19th Century Japan, Master Haiku poet <a href=\"http:\/\/haikuguy.com\/issa\/aboutissa.html\">Kobayashi Issa<\/a> saw all four of his children die in the first two years of their lives.\u00a0 His sorrow and loss, and his love for small children, can be seen in many of his poems.\u00a0 Here is a sample:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px\">this world<br \/>\nis a dewdrop world<br \/>\nyes&#8230; Translator David G. Lanoue <a href=\"http:\/\/haikuguy.com\/issa\/haiku.php?code=459.01a\">explained the context<\/a> of this last poem:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 90px\">&#8220;This haiku was written in Seventh Month, 1819. Its biographical context is important, because Issa&#8217;s daughter, Sato, born the previous year, died of smallpox in Sixth Month of 1819&#8211;just a few weeks before Issa composed this poem. As he sits looking at the harvest moon&#8211;one of the most joyful occasions in the calendar for a haiku poet&#8211;the happy occasion is marred by a palpable absense.
