I like artful wordplay and advocacy, but over-the-top mendacity sets my stomach spinning.<\/FONT><\/DIV>

Tonight’s RNC speeches left me with a bad case of agita<\/EM>, and no appetite for political propaganda <\/FONT>from either party.  So, I was surprised to find my weary self fully engaged in <\/FONT><\/FONT>Christopher Lydon<\/STRONG><\/FONT><\/A>‘s <\/FONT>latest post, <\/FONT><\/FONT>It’s Rockefeller’s Party<\/STRONG><\/FONT><\/EM><\/A> (Sept. 1, 2004).  His thoughtful, urgent message on the nature of the <\/FONT>Republican Party needs to be considered by everyone <\/FONT>interested in the politics and future of our nation.  <\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>

<\/FONT> <\/DIV>
\n
The GOP is not the heir to Reaganite conservatism,<\/EM> says Lydon.  It is  the Grand Old <\/STRONG>Rockefeller<\/EM> Party.   <\/STRONG><\/FONT>This <\/EM><\/FONT><\/FONT>GORP<\/STRONG><\/FONT><\/A> isn’t fueled with raisins, nuts, and seeds grown in the soil of California extremism.   It’s a mixture made from Standard Oil, Wall Street wealth, and <\/FONT>Rockefeller instincts — spiced with arrogance and a sense of entitlement “compounded with secrecy . . . and a <\/FONT>possesive outlook on the whole world.”<\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>

After quoting Ron Reagan, Jr. and Kevin Phillips, Lydon ends with <\/FONT>Pat Buchanan<\/STRONG><\/FONT><\/A>‘s warning:<\/FONT><\/DIV>

“Under the rubric of conservatism, the Republican party of Bush I and II has been reinventing itself into <\/FONT>what conservatives would have once recognized as a Rockefeller party reciting Reaganite rhetoric<\/STRONG>.”  <\/FONT>Buchanan predicts a civil war within the Party.  <\/FONT>And, <\/FONT>Lydon says the issue will be Empire.<\/FONT><\/FONT><\/DIV>
