如果说历史是重复的，阅读罗马帝国的兴衰不仅可以抚今追昔，而且还能预测超级大国未来的社会走向。凯撒大帝的雄心壮志和他指定的继承人屋大维的远谋深虑在他们的坎坷政治和戍马生涯中展现的淋漓尽致。虽然历史往往是胜利者们写的，但勝利者的命運终究却逃不出历史或上苍的安排。所谓后来的“罗马五贤帝“ 里真正把人世看透的皇帝非马可·奥勒留（121-180）莫属。他后来被誉为“哲学家皇帝”，留给世人著名的《沉思录》，非常值得一读。
