Recently these cockroaches have moved to larger digs. The new, big tank was donated by Dr. Alan Grant, a Visiting Scientist at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hsph.harvard.edu\/\" title=\"Harvard School of Public Health\">HSPH<\/a>. Thank you Dr. Grant!  Stop by and hold a few hissing cockroaches and you will wonder why you ever thought your cat was so cuddly.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ernstmayrlibrary\/2012\/08\/22\/wildlife-around-the-museum\/img_0009\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-258\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ernstmayrlibrary\/files\/2012\/08\/IMG_0009-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Hissing cockroaches as Library pets\" title=\"Hissing cockroaches\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-258\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nOccasionally you can also see wildlife around the MCZ&#8211;living animals, not just the amazing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mcz.harvard.edu\/collections\/index.html\">research collections<\/a> full of treasures or the incredible exhibits in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hmnh.harvard.edu\/\">Harvard Museum of Natural History<\/a>.<br \/>\nIn June, I walked out of the building and was privileged to watch a turkey hen foraging.  The turkey didn&#8217;t seem bothered by the people walking along the paths.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ernstmayrlibrary\/2012\/08\/22\/wildlife-around-the-museum\/turkey-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-271\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ernstmayrlibrary\/files\/2012\/08\/turkey1-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Turkey at the MCZ\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-271\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ernstmayrlibrary\/2012\/08\/22\/wildlife-around-the-museum\/turkey2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-270\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ernstmayrlibrary\/files\/2012\/08\/turkey2-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"turkey2\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-270\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>More recently, as I hurried to the Oxford St. garage, anxious to get home, I was stopped in my tracks when I saw a young rabbit hopping around near the entrance.  <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ernstmayrlibrary\/2012\/08\/22\/wildlife-around-the-museum\/nwlabsrabbit2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-275\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ernstmayrlibrary\/files\/2012\/08\/nwlabsrabbit2-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"nwlabsrabbit2\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-275\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ernstmayrlibrary\/2012\/08\/22\/wildlife-around-the-museum\/nwlabsrabbit\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-274\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ernstmayrlibrary\/files\/2012\/08\/nwlabsrabbit-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"nwlabsrabbit\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-274\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Romantically, I would like to think there is a previously unknown breeding colony of New England Cottontails (<em>Sylvilagus transitionalis<\/em>) finding enough scrubby acreage to survive and stealthily hiding from the humans at Harvard,<br \/>\n<div id=\"attachment_276\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ernstmayrlibrary\/2012\/08\/22\/wildlife-around-the-museum\/new_england_cottontail_1\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-276\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-276\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ernstmayrlibrary\/files\/2012\/08\/new_england_cottontail_1-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"new_england_cottontail_1\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-276\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-276\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">New England Cottontail, TheAnimalFiles.com<\/p><\/div><br \/>\nor even some sneaky Eastern cottontails (<em>Sylvilagus floridanus<\/em>).  Alas, I am probably living in a fantasy world and this one has escaped from a less ideal setting.
