Alexander Wilson: the Scot who Founded American Ornithology

by Edward H. Burtt, Jr. and William E. Davis, Jr.

http://www.hup.harvard.edu/catalog.php?isbn=9780674072558&content=book

This definitive new biography of Wilson, from Harvard University Press, features the collection of “Original drawings and watercolors made for American Ornithology” in the Special Collections of the Ernst Mayr Library.   Authors Burtt and Davis worked extensively with Special Collections staff Dana Fisher and Robert Young, both with the original drawings and other Wilson materials such as correspondence and manuscripts.

Alexander Wilson (1766-1813), who was born in Paisley, Scotland, emigrated to the United States in 1794, settling in Philadelphia, PA.   Beginning in 1808, Wilson published the nine volume series American Ornithology, describing and illustrating 268 species of birds. The final volume of the series was completed by Wilson’s colleague George Ord in 1814, following Wilson’s untimely death at the age of 47.

Wilson’s work, especially the realistic depiction and coloring of the birds, was an inspiration to John James Audubon (1785-1851).   In addition to his accomplishments as a naturalist, illustrator, and author, Wilson was also a skilled weaver and poet.   It is fitting to celebrate Wilson with this new volume, in the bicentennial year of his death.  Burtt and Davis portray Wilson’s life and work in detail, with additional sections on his predecessors, colleagues and legacy.

Librarian Travels

ø

The Library was represented recently at the annual conference of the International Association of Aquatic & Marine Sciences Libraries & Information Centers (IAMSLIC), held this year in Dania Beach, Florida. The group is truly international, and this year’s participants came from Argentina, New Caledonia, Germany, Italy, Argentina, France, and Senegal, as well as from all over the US and Canada. The theme was “Visualizing a Bright Future.” Dorothy Barr represented the Library as editor of the conference Proceedings and also gave a presentation on Bioluminescence, discussing the topic and how the Library partnered with faculty, staff and students from the MCZ, HMNH, MCB and OEB to create Bioluminescence exhibit and the current exhibit on biological Time in the Northwest lobby and the accompanying online guide .

Honeybee Tea

On Tuesday September 24, the Ernst Mayr Library hosted a Honeybee Tea party, continuing the theme of Bee Day at Harvard, which was held on September 10. Students and staff from the OEB and MCB departments joined library staff from across campus for tea and honey-themed treats. Special Collections displayed a “flash exhibit” for the occasion, featuring books on bees and beekeeping. Entomological works on bees with beautiful color plates shared the spotlight with illustrations of nineteenth century beekeepers and  their apparatus.   Modern books on bees and honey were displayed for browsing in the Reference Room.   Many thanks go to the librarians from Widener and Lamont who brought tea and teapots for the refreshments.  They welcome all library staff to their biweekly tea on Tuesday afternoons at the Widener Café.
