{"id":27,"date":"2005-03-24T09:52:19","date_gmt":"2005-03-24T13:52:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ecclog\/2005\/03\/24\/children-or-the-lack-thereof-as-an-urb"},"modified":"2005-03-24T09:52:19","modified_gmt":"2005-03-24T13:52:19","slug":"children-or-the-lack-thereof-as-an-urban-problem","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/ecclog\/2005\/03\/24\/children-or-the-lack-thereof-as-an-urban-problem\/","title":{"rendered":"Children, or the Lack Thereof, as an Urban Problem"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name='a588'><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Having grown up in S.F. during an era of Catholic school closings and consolidation, it doesn&#8217;t surprise me that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2005\/03\/24\/national\/24childless.html?ex=1269320400&amp;en=cbfa254535a51a5f&amp;ei=5090&amp;partner=rssuserland\">the city is the paragon of growing trend of great American cities bleeding children<\/a>:<\/p>\n<div style=\"margin-left: 40px;\">San Francisco, where the median house price is now about $700,000, had<br \/>\nthe lowest percentage of people under 18 of any large city in the<br \/>\nnation, 14.5 percent, compared with 25.7 percent nationwide, the 2000<br \/>\ncensus reported.<br \/>\n&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Longman said a decline in children not only takes away &#8220;human<br \/>\ncapital&#8221; needed to sustain an aging population, but &#8220;having fewer<br \/>\nchildren really diminishes the quality of life in a city.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>Most<br \/>\ncity leaders seem to agree.
