{"id":160,"date":"2005-12-22T12:42:53","date_gmt":"2005-12-22T16:42:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ecclog\/2005\/12\/22\/coal-in-my-stocking\/"},"modified":"2005-12-22T12:42:53","modified_gmt":"2005-12-22T16:42:53","slug":"coal-in-my-stocking","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/ecclog\/2005\/12\/22\/coal-in-my-stocking\/","title":{"rendered":"Coal in My Stocking"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name='a1094'><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If the House signs on, it appears that the Patriot Act won&#8217;t expire in 9 days, and will be <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2005\/12\/22\/politics\/22patriot.html\">extended for 6 additional months<\/a>.&nbsp;<br \/>\nThat&#8217;s just enough time for the Bush wiretapping\/eavesdropping story to<br \/>\nblow over so that he can push for a permanent extension.&nbsp; TK<br \/>\npassed on this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.msnbc.msn.com\/id\/10536559\/site\/newsweek\/\">Newsweek piece<\/a> about how Bush met with the NYT to try to dissuade them from printing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2005\/12\/16\/politics\/16program.html?ex=1292389200&amp;en=e32072d786623ac1&amp;ei=5090&amp;partner=rssuserland&amp;emc=rss\">the eavesdropping story<\/a> (after they already sat on it for over a year). To cap it off, as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boingboing.net\/2005\/12\/22\/moment_of_presidenti.html\">boingboing points out<\/a>, Bush knew he was going beyond the bounds of the Constitution as this excerpt from an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/news\/releases\/2004\/04\/20040420-2.html#\">April 2004<\/a> speech demonstrates:<\/p>\n<div style=\"margin-left: 40px;\">[T]here are such things as roving wiretaps. Now, by the way, any time<br \/>\nyou hear the United States government talking about wiretap, it<br \/>\nrequires &#8212; a wiretap requires a court order. Nothing has changed, by<br \/>\nthe way. When we&#8217;re talking about chasing down terrorists, we&#8217;re<br \/>\ntalking about getting a court order before we do so.
