{"id":130,"date":"2005-10-13T11:41:45","date_gmt":"2005-10-13T15:41:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/ecclog\/2005\/10\/13\/more-media-invented-worries\/"},"modified":"2005-10-13T11:41:45","modified_gmt":"2005-10-13T15:41:45","slug":"more-media-invented-worries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/ecclog\/2005\/10\/13\/more-media-invented-worries\/","title":{"rendered":"More Media-Invented Worries"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name='a993'><\/a><\/p>\n<p><P>Oh no, <A href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2005\/10\/09\/magazine\/09wwln.html\">another essay<\/A> on the Boomer fear that we 20-somethings are &#8220;wasting&#8221; our lives.<\/P><br \/>\n<P>In a way, I am glad that my parents are not perplexed by this.&nbsp; My dad is still trying to grow up, between his new baby and Verve Remixed CDs.&nbsp; And my mom is fabulous about the idea of aging.&nbsp; I wrongly asked her, &#8220;Was there an age when you felt that you started that you were getting less pretty?&#8221;*&nbsp; And she responded, &#8220;I&#8217;m fat, but I&#8217;m&nbsp;still pretty.&nbsp; All I need to do is take off my glasses and put on my contacts.&#8221;&nbsp; Bless her heart.<\/P><br \/>\n<P>*This question was inspired by my casual observation that one begins to age by either having a face that becomes too gaunt or too chubby.<\/P><br \/>\n<P>**<\/P><br \/>\n<P>Perhaps we should be worrying about the Boomers.&nbsp; While we&#8217;re off collecting degrees and passport stamps,&nbsp; they&#8217;re the <A href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/news\/printedition\/front\/la-me-overdose10oct10,1,3285194.story?coll=la-headlines-frontpage&amp;ctrack=1&amp;cset=true\">ones OD&#8217;ing<\/A>:<\/P><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<P>In California, the age at which someone was most likely to die from a drug overdose in 1970 was 22; by 1985, it was 32; and today it is 43, according to calculations by Males, based on state health data.<BR><\/P><\/BLOCKQUOTE><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Oh no, another essay on the Boomer fear that we 20-somethings are &#8220;wasting&#8221; our lives.
