Dowd<\/a>:\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 40px;\">Michael Brown, the blithering idiot in charge of FEMA &#8211; a job he<br \/>\ntrained for by running something called the International Arabian Horse<br \/>\nAssociation &#8211; <a href=\"cnnVideo('play','\/video\/bestoftv\/2005\/09\/02\/soledad.fema.brown.katrina.cnn','\/bestoftv');\">admitted he didn&#8217;t know<\/a> until Thursday that there were<br \/>\n15,000 desperate, dehydrated, hungry, angry, dying victims of Katrina<br \/>\nin the New Orleans Convention Center. <\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 40px;\"> Was he sacked instantly?<br \/>\nNo, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/news\/releases\/2005\/09\/20050902-2.html\">our tone-deaf president hailed him<\/a> in Mobile, Ala., yesterday:<br \/>\n&#8220;Brownie, you&#8217;re doing a heck of a job.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left: 40px;\"> It would be one thing<br \/>\nif President Bush and his inner circle &#8211; Dick Cheney was vacationing in<br \/>\nWyoming; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/front\/story\/342712p-292600c.html\">Condi Rice was shoe shopping at Ferragamo&#8217;s on Fifth Avenue<br \/>\nand attended &#8220;Spamalot&#8221; before bloggers chased her back to Washington<\/a>;*<br \/>\nand Andy Card was off in Maine &#8211; lacked empathy but could get the job<br \/>\ndone. But it is a chilling lack of empathy combined with a stunning<br \/>\nlack of efficiency that could make this administration implode.\n<\/p>\n<p>If I can cut weekend trips short to take on unexpected research<br \/>\nassignments, surely, these people could have put their lazy August \/<br \/>\nSeptember plans on hold.\n<\/p>\n<p>*I am aware that this link is to a rather dubious publication, but I wanted something out of the blogosphere.\n<\/p>\n<p>**\n<\/p>\n<p>Otherwise, two things learned yesterday: (1) mixing HLS and Stanford<br \/>\nLaw alums is a caustic combination; and (2) a handy phrase from SF<br \/>\nlesbian vernacular, &#8220;Marina Gina.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hyperlinking text in today&#8217;s bit of of rightous indignation from Mme.
