{"id":174,"date":"2011-06-17T13:42:08","date_gmt":"2011-06-17T17:42:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/dpla\/?p=96"},"modified":"2011-09-28T17:45:10","modified_gmt":"2011-09-28T17:45:10","slug":"dpla-listserv-recap-june-17-2011","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/dplaalpha\/2011\/06\/17\/dpla-listserv-recap-june-17-2011\/","title":{"rendered":"DPLA Listserv Recap: June 17, 2011"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>Technology\/Preservation<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<strong>Karen Coyle<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/lists\/arc\/dpla-discussion\/2011-06\/msg00069.html\" target=\"_blank\">raised<\/a> the issue of measurement of library services, urging the DPLA to consider implementing measurement capabilities in the site.<strong> Wayne Martin <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/lists\/arc\/dpla-discussion\/2011-06\/msg00063.html\" target=\"_blank\">presented<\/a> an outline for the technical aspects of a \u201cone system\u201d library and <a href=\"https:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/lists\/arc\/dpla-discussion\/2011-06\/msg00072.html\" target=\"_blank\">discussed<\/a> new methods of digital copyright. <strong>David Rothman <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/lists\/arc\/dpla-discussion\/2011-06\/msg00058.html\" target=\"_blank\">suggested<\/a> that the open approach would limit the scope of content and accessibility. <strong>Sandy Thatcher <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/lists\/arc\/dpla-discussion\/2011-06\/msg00065.html\" target=\"_blank\">raised<\/a> the issue of copyright, discussing works that are legally available for sharing and suggesting that the DPLA could aid in their digital preservation of these works.<strong> Peter Kaufman <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/lists\/arc\/dpla-discussion\/2011-06\/msg00066.html\" target=\"_blank\">suggested<\/a> that the DPLA would be able to provide digitization resources to institutions that are otherwise unable to join a larger, digital organization. <strong>Will Owen <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/lists\/arc\/dpla-discussion\/2011-06\/msg00067.html\" target=\"_blank\">mentioned<\/a> \u201cDigitalNC: North Carolina\u2019s Digital Heritage\u201d in support of these ideas.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>Forking Discussion\/Collaboration<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<strong>Jeremy York<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/lists\/arc\/dpla-discussion\/2011-06\/msg00057.html\" target=\"_blank\">suggested<\/a> that the forking debate was predicated on uncertain assumptions such as sources of funding and demographics and the need\/benefits of collaboration, generating a list of six fundamental questions for listserv members to answer. He called for an expanded scope of discussion focused not just on the difference between public and academic libraries but on new ideas and possibilities for collaboration among myriad institutions. <strong>David Curry<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/lists\/arc\/dpla-discussion\/2011-06\/msg00060.html\" target=\"_blank\">addre<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/lists\/arc\/dpla-discussion\/2011-06\/msg00060.html\" target=\"_blank\">ssed<\/a> the convergence between libraries and other types of archives, pointing to efforts like CALM (Committee on Archives, Libraries and Museums).<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>What is the value of collaboration?
