Rumsfeld said Tuesday that<br \/>\n        the Pentagon is reviewing its practice of paying to plant stories in<br \/>\n        the Iraqi news media, withdrawing his earlier claim that it had been<br \/>\n        stopped.<\/p>\n<p>      Rumsfeld told reporters he was mistaken in the earlier assertion.<\/p>\n<p>Secretary of Defense Donald H. I do have<br \/>\n        knowledge it was put under review. I was correctly informed. And I just<br \/>\n        misstated the facts,&quot; Rumsfeld said at a Pentagon news briefing.<\/p>\n<p>from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2006\/02\/21\/AR2006022100730.html\">Washington Post<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>We don&#8217;t know about the rest of you, but we have a hard time understanding<br \/>\n        Rummy sometimes, which is curious considering his reputation as a blunt<br \/>\n        straight-shooter. Near as we can tell, the about quote means that the<br \/>\n        US government is still paying journalists for favorable stories on and<br \/>\n        in Iraq.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>We certainly hope this is the case, as we have just finished a terrific<br \/>\n        contribution to the genre. It is designed to win the hearts and minds<br \/>\n        of the local population, as well as to make US forces look good to supporters<br \/>\n        and critics alike, around the globe. And if you like this one, there&#8217;s plenty more where<br \/>\n        that came from&#8230;.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/dowbrigade\/mirbrig.jpg\" width=\"380\" height=\"288\" align=\"left\">IRAQ &#8211; According to a growing legion of local legends, members of a<br \/>\n        mysterious &quot;Miracle Brigade&quot; have been appearing in different<br \/>\n        cities and regions of Iraq to do good deeds, save people in peril, and<br \/>\n        in some cases,&nbsp; undo<br \/>\n        damage done by sectarian violence and attacks on American Forces.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;We don&#8217;t know who they are.&quot; according to Walid Wazeen, a village leader in northeastern Iraq, &quot;but<br \/>\n        they come when people are most desperate. They wear American uniforms,<br \/>\n      but with the insignia covered, and they are always smiling.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>At least some of the group are doctors, as their field actions include<br \/>\n        removing shrapnel, restorative cosmetic surgery and emergency gender<br \/>\n      reassignment surgery. They also often leave behind much needed medicines<br \/>\n        and medical supplies.<\/p>\n<p>Among the other actions attributed to the &quot;Miracle Brigade&quot; are rescuing<br \/>\n        civilians trapped in rubble, delivering books and study materials to<br \/>\n        bombed out schools, repairing broken-down generators and small appliances,<br \/>\n      finding lost pets and organizing local lotteries and raffles.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;They arrive from the heavens like Saints,&quot; said 11-year-old Abdul Masool,<br \/>\n        clutching the baseball glove they left him, about the soldiers, who<br \/>\n        arrive by helicopter, often at night, with blinding floodlights and symphonic<br \/>\n        music<br \/>\n        playing on a powerful PA system aboard the choppers,<br \/>\n        &quot;Every<br \/>\n        night<br \/>\n        we pray<br \/>\n        that they will come back.&quot;\n                      <\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WASHINGTON &#8212; Defense Secretary Donald H.
