{"id":64,"date":"2005-02-14T20:09:13","date_gmt":"2005-02-15T00:09:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/dbnews\/2005\/02\/14\/but-do-they-feel-fear\/"},"modified":"2005-02-14T20:09:13","modified_gmt":"2005-02-15T00:09:13","slug":"but-do-they-feel-fear","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/dowbrigade\/2005\/02\/14\/but-do-they-feel-fear\/","title":{"rendered":"But Do They Feel Fear?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name='a4591'><\/a><\/p>\n<table width=\"537\" border=\"0\">\n<tr>\n<td>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/dowbrigade\/bobster.jpg\" width=\"309\" height=\"303\" align=\"left\">(AP) A new study out of Norway concludes that it&#8217;s unlikely lobsters<br \/>\n        feel pain, stirring up a long-simmering debate over whether the valuable<br \/>\n        seafood<br \/>\n        suffers when it&#8217;s being cooked. <\/p>\n<p>        Animal activists for years have claimed that lobsters feel excruciating<br \/>\n        agony when they are cooked, and that dropping one in a pot of boiling water<br \/>\n        is tantamount to torture. <\/p>\n<p>        The study, which was funded by the Norwegian government and written by<br \/>\n        a scientist at the University of Oslo, suggests that lobsters and other<br \/>\n        invertebrates probably don&#8217;t suffer even if lobsters do tend to thrash<br \/>\n        in boiling water. <\/p>\n<p>&quot;Lobsters and crabs have some capacity of learning, but it is unlikely<br \/>\n        that they can feel pain,&quot; the study concluded. <\/p>\n<p>        The 39-page report was aimed at determining if invertebrates should be<br \/>\n        subject to animal welfare legislation as Norway revises its animal welfare<br \/>\n        law.
