{"id":531,"date":"2005-09-17T20:46:28","date_gmt":"2005-09-18T00:46:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/dbnews\/2005\/09\/17\/aussie-charged-with-40000-volts\/"},"modified":"2005-09-17T20:46:28","modified_gmt":"2005-09-18T00:46:28","slug":"aussie-charged-with-40000-volts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/dowbrigade\/2005\/09\/17\/aussie-charged-with-40000-volts\/","title":{"rendered":"Aussie Charged With 40,000 Volts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name='a7063'><\/a><\/p>\n<table width=\"537\" border=\"0\">\n<tr>\n<td height=\"394\">\n<p align=\"justify\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/dowbrigade\/flameon.jpg\" width=\"200\" height=\"150\" align=\"left\">SYDNEY (Reuters) &#8211; An Australian man<br \/>\n        built up a 40,000-volt charge of static electricity in his clothes as<br \/>\n        he walked, leaving a trail of scorched carpet and molten plastic and<br \/>\n        forcing firefighters to evacuate a building.<\/p>\n<p>      Frank Clewer, who was wearing a woolen shirt and a synthetic nylon jacket,<br \/>\n      was oblivious to the growing electrical current that was building up as<br \/>\n      his clothes rubbed together.<\/p>\n<p>      When he walked into a building in the country town of Warrnambool in the<br \/>\n      southern state of Victoria Thursday, the electrical charge ignited the<br \/>\n      carpet.<\/p>\n<p>      &quot;It sounded almost like a firecracker,&quot; Clewer told Australian<br \/>\n      radio Friday.&quot;Within about five minutes, the carpet started to erupt.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>      Employees, unsure of the cause of the mysterious burning smell, telephoned<br \/>\n      firefighters who evacuated the building.<\/p>\n<p>      &quot;There were several scorch marks in the carpet, and we could hear<br \/>\n      a cracking noise &#8212; a bit like a whip &#8212; both inside and outside the building,&quot; said<br \/>\n      fire official Henry Barton.<\/p>\n<p>      Clewer, who after leaving the building discovered he had scorched a piece<br \/>\n      of plastic on the floor of his car, returned to seek help from the firefighters.<\/p>\n<p>      &quot;We tested his clothes with a static electricity field meter and measured<br \/>\n      a current of 40,000 volts, which is one step shy of spontaneous combustion,<br \/>\n      where his clothes would have self-ignited,&quot; Barton said.<\/p>\n<p>      I&#8217;ve been firefighting for over 35 years and I&#8217;ve never come across anything<br \/>\n      like this,&quot; he said.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">from <a href=\"http:\/\/reuters.excite.com\/\/article\/20050916\/2005-09-16T143042Z_01_EIC652134_RTRIDST_0_ODD-AUSTRALIA-ELECTRICITY-DC.html\">Reuters<\/a><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SYDNEY (Reuters) &#8211; An Australian man built up a 40,000-volt charge of static electricity in his clothes as he walked, leaving a trail of scorched carpet and molten plastic and forcing firefighters to evacuate a building.
