{"id":459,"date":"2005-08-16T20:58:23","date_gmt":"2005-08-17T00:58:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/dbnews\/2005\/08\/16\/origin-of-life-on-earth-veritas-versio"},"modified":"2005-08-16T20:58:23","modified_gmt":"2005-08-17T00:58:23","slug":"origin-of-life-on-earth-veritas-version","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/dowbrigade\/2005\/08\/16\/origin-of-life-on-earth-veritas-version\/","title":{"rendered":"Origin of Life on Earth &#8211; Veritas Version"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name='a6697'><\/a><\/p>\n<table width=\"537\" border=\"0\">\n<tr>\n<td>\n<p align=\"justify\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/dowbrigade\/adaman.jpg\" width=\"537\" height=\"241\"><br \/>\n      Ever the pretentious spotlight seeker, Harvard has<br \/>\n        jumped into the fray about one of the fundamental questions of our or<br \/>\n        any time, &quot;Where did we come from?&quot;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"justify\">Harvard University is planning a scientific study of<br \/>\n          how life emerged on Earth.The study thrusts one of America&#8217;s most prestigious<br \/>\n          universities into the growing, politically charged debate over an alternative<br \/>\n          to Charles Darwin&#8217;s theory of evolution.<\/p>\n<p>          Opponents of the theory of evolution said Harvard&#8217;s research project<br \/>\n          is proof that science has yet to disprove alternative theories, including<br \/>\n          the idea of &quot;intelligent design&quot;, which is popular with America&#8217;s<br \/>\n          religious conservatives.<\/p>\n<p>          At Harvard, the &quot;Origins of Life in the Universe&quot; study will<br \/>\n          cross various disciplines of biology, chemistry and astronomy to seek<br \/>\n          answers to longtime questions about evolution, a Harvard official said<br \/>\n          on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>          Harvard tried to downplay the timing of the project, saying it was not<br \/>\n          in response to the debate over intelligent design theory, which has attracted<br \/>\n          so much attention that it was the cover story of Time magazine this month.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;This is not something that began recently or something that began<br \/>\n          in reaction to what&#8217;s going on in the larger environment,&quot; said<br \/>\n          Harvard spokesman B D Colen. &quot;It&#8217;s a project<br \/>\n          that began because scientists are seeking answers to some of the biggest<br \/>\n        questions ever posed.&quot;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"justify\">As the great <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Joseph_Campbell\">Joseph<br \/>\n          Campbell<\/a> would tell us (were he<br \/>\n        still alive) a culture&#8217;s origin myth says alot about how it defines itself<br \/>\n        and its relation to the world.
