{"id":355,"date":"2005-07-01T00:30:45","date_gmt":"2005-07-01T04:30:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/dbnews\/2005\/07\/01\/promising-developments\/"},"modified":"2005-07-01T00:30:45","modified_gmt":"2005-07-01T04:30:45","slug":"promising-developments","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/dowbrigade\/2005\/07\/01\/promising-developments\/","title":{"rendered":"Promising Developments"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name='a5347'><\/a><\/p>\n<table width=\"537\" border=\"0\">\n<tr>\n<td>\n<p align=\"justify\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/dowbrigade\/googette.gif\" width=\"200\" height=\"78\" align=\"left\">Two<br \/>\n        interesting stories appeared in this morning&#8217;s Boston Globe.&nbsp; It<br \/>\n        is mute testimony to our busy, busy lifestyle these days &#8211; teaching overload,<br \/>\n        filial crises, managing the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kwrintl.com\/busan\/index.html\">web-end <\/a>of a major international conference<br \/>\n        &#8211; that we are only now able to get together a posting.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">First, an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boston.com\/business\/globe\/articles\/2005\/06\/30\/google_points_way_to_maps_code\/\">article<br \/>\n          about Google<\/a> open-sourcing their propriatary<br \/>\n        mapping routines, so we could, for example, create a find-a-spliff service,<br \/>\n        where just by entering a zip code, well, you get the idea&#8230;.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"justify\">Hacking Google Maps just went legitimate.<\/p>\n<p>          When the online information search giant launched a feature in February<br \/>\n          letting Web surfers pull up maps and satellite images of virtually any<br \/>\n          neighborhood in America, hackers quickly found the Google service made<br \/>\n          it possible to present data in cartographic format. Unlike existing services<br \/>\n          from Time Warner Inc.&#8217;s MapQuest.com and Yahoo Inc. that are limited<br \/>\n          to presenting information authorized by the portal &#8212; like locations<br \/>\n          of pizza shops or bank machines &#8212; Google Maps let people plug in their<br \/>\n        own data.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p align=\"justify\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.boston.com\/business\/technology\/articles\/2005\/06\/30\/necn_will_air_viewers_videos_post_them_on_web\/\">The<br \/>\n          other story<\/a>, we are sure, has already been noted<br \/>\n        by <a href=\"http:\/\/stevegarfield.blogs.com\/videoblog\/\">Steve Garfield<\/a>,<br \/>\n        our favorite video-blogger.&nbsp; Look for his work<br \/>\n        soon on New England Cable News, which has launched an open-submission<br \/>\n        broadcast video blogger&#8217;s digest.
