{"id":300,"date":"2005-05-25T12:51:09","date_gmt":"2005-05-25T16:51:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/dbnews\/2005\/05\/25\/american-idle\/"},"modified":"2005-05-25T12:51:09","modified_gmt":"2005-05-25T16:51:09","slug":"american-idle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/dowbrigade\/2005\/05\/25\/american-idle\/","title":{"rendered":"American Idle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name='a5187'><\/a><\/p>\n<table width=\"537\" border=\"0\">\n<tr>\n<td height=\"211\">\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/dowbrigade.com\/images\/pasport.jpg\" width=\"260\" height=\"372\" align=\"left\">New<br \/>\n        Belgian identity cards have been printed with spelling mistakes in a bid<br \/>\n        to fool forgers.<\/p>\n<p>        The identity cards include the country name in the three official Belgian<br \/>\n        languages of French, German and Dutch as well as English.<\/p>\n<p>        Instead of &#8216;Belgien&#8217; in German, the ID cars incorrectly say &#8216;Belgine&#8217;<br \/>\n        and instead of &#8216;Belgium&#8217; in English, they say &#8216;Belguim&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>        According to Luc Vanneste, of the government department in charge of issuing<br \/>\n        the cards, other errors will be printed on the card to further confound<br \/>\n        fraudsters.<\/p>\n<p>        He said a similar system had proved successful in the United States.<\/p>\n<p><em>What! The Dowbrigade whips out his driver&#8217;s liscence and begins scouring<br \/>\n        for mispellings&#8230;..Of course, as one of the worst spellers to ever have<br \/>\n        been admitted to the English Teacher&#8217;s Guild, how would we know?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Better idea &#8211; SCAN the liscence, and then OCR it, and run it through<br \/>\n        the spell-checker in our word processor. We will blog the results when<br \/>\n        they come in from our highly qualified tech team.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>In the meantime, has anyone heard of this nefarious government plot<br \/>\n        to INTENTIONALLY plant misspelling in official U.S. government documents?<br \/>\n        Is Dan Quayle working for the Department of Homeland Security? Do they need copywriters?
