{"id":2957,"date":"2006-08-08T08:23:18","date_gmt":"2006-08-08T12:23:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/dbnews\/2006\/08\/08\/ladies-and-gentlemen-you-are-floating-"},"modified":"2006-08-08T08:23:18","modified_gmt":"2006-08-08T12:23:18","slug":"ladies-and-gentlemen-you-are-floating-in-space","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/dowbrigade\/2006\/08\/08\/ladies-and-gentlemen-you-are-floating-in-space\/","title":{"rendered":"Ladies and Gentlemen, You are Floating in Space"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name='a8706'><\/a><\/p>\n<table width=\"537\" border=\"0\">\n<tr>\n<td>\n<p align=\"justify\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/dowbrigade\/floatingbed.jpg\" width=\"379\" height=\"171\" align=\"left\">AMSTERDAM (Reuters) &#8211; A young Dutch architect has<br \/>\n          created a floating bed which hovers above the ground through magnetic<br \/>\n          force and comes with a price tag of 1.2 million euros ($1.54 million).<\/p>\n<p>        Janjaap Ruijssenaars took inspiration for the bed &#8212; a sleek<br \/>\n        black platform, which took six years to develop and can double as a dining<br \/>\n        table or a plinth &#8212; from the mysterious monolith in Stanley Kubrick&#8217;s<br \/>\n        1968 cult film &quot;2001: A Space Odyssey.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>        &quot;No matter where you live all architecture is dictated by gravity.<br \/>\n        I wondered whether you could make an object, a building or a piece of<br \/>\n        furniture<br \/>\n        where this is not the case &#8212; where another power actually dictates the<br \/>\n        image,&quot; Ruijssenaars said.<\/p>\n<p>        &quot;Magnets built into the floor and into the<br \/>\n          bed itself repel each other, pushing the bed up into the air.
