{"id":2920,"date":"2006-06-24T18:10:27","date_gmt":"2006-06-24T22:10:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/dbnews\/2006\/06\/24\/peta-claims-circus-cruel-to-critters\/"},"modified":"2006-06-24T18:10:27","modified_gmt":"2006-06-24T22:10:27","slug":"peta-claims-circus-cruel-to-critters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/dowbrigade\/2006\/06\/24\/peta-claims-circus-cruel-to-critters\/","title":{"rendered":"PETA Claims Circus Cruel to Critters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name='a8616'><\/a><\/p>\n<table width=\"537\" border=\"0\">\n<tr>\n<td>\n<p align=\"justify\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/dowbrigade\/petacrul.jpg\" width=\"270\" height=\"205\" align=\"left\">PETA activists are cracking the whip on Springfield-based<br \/>\n          <a href=\"http:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/\">Merriam-Webster<\/a>, demanding that the definition of &quot;circus&quot; be rewritten<br \/>\n          to label the big top as cruel to &quot;captive&quot; animal performers. <\/p>\n<p>The dictionary currently defines a circus as &quot;an arena often covered by<br \/>\na tent and used for variety shows, usually including feats of physical skill,<br \/>\nwild animal<br \/>\nacts, and performances by clowns.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>But People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals &#8211; known for caging naked women<br \/>\nto protest the wearing of fur and protesting the living conditions of pet store<br \/>\niguanas &#8211; wants a new entry. <\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"> PETA&#8217;s proposal defines a circus as a &quot;spectacle that relies on captive<br \/>\n          animals&quot; who are &quot;forced to perform tricks under the constant threat<br \/>\n          of punishment.&quot; It also wants the definition to say that &quot;modern circuses<br \/>\n          include only willing human performers.&quot;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">from the <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bostonherald.com\/localRegional\/view.bg?articleid=145098\">Boston Herald<\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">As an English teacher and a linguist, we are shocked that PETA would<br \/>\n          take their campaign to the editorial offices of a dictionary, of all<br \/>\n          places.&nbsp; While opposition to animal cruelty is all well and good,<br \/>\n          applying political editorial alterations to dictionary definitions<br \/>\n          would be somewhat akin to publishing a cookbook with politically correct<br \/>\n          admonitions after key ingredients (Beat 4 eggs **WARNING &#8211; Consumption<br \/>\n          of more than two eggs per week can lead to dangerous levels of cholesterol**<br \/>\n          Next, melt 8 tbs of butter (1 stick) **WARNING &#8211; butter contains saturated<br \/>\n          fats, which have been shown to produce hardening of the arteries**,<br \/>\n          etc.).<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">Hey, PETA, quit messing with the English language! The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/\">Merriman<br \/>\n            Webster<\/a>          dictionary happens to be our favorite <a href=\"http:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/\">on-line<br \/>\n            dictionary<\/a> to<br \/>\n          use with our students because of the concise definitions and<br \/>\n          the free and fast pronunciation button &#8211; click it and hear a clear,<br \/>\n          US Evening News prouncation of any word. But it is not WIKIPEDIA. No<br \/>\n            user editing.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">If you feel that some circuses are cruel and exploitive, by all means<br \/>\n          expose them &#8211; hold a press conference, publish shocking pictures on<br \/>\n          the internet, organize a protest, write your Congresspeople, march<br \/>\n          outside the Circus sites, create a blog, sneak cameras behind the scenes<br \/>\n          and<br \/>\n          post<br \/>\n          the video<br \/>\n          on<br \/>\n          a videoblog,<br \/>\n          make a movie, publish a book, a pamphlet, a tract, a flyer,  a glossy<br \/>\n          magazine or your own dictionary, organize a concert, enlist animal-loving<br \/>\n          celebrities,<br \/>\n          go on Oprah, but for Webster&#8217;s sake, leave the language alone.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>PETA activists are cracking the whip on Springfield-based Merriam-Webster, demanding that the definition of &quot;circus&quot; be rewritten to label the big top as cruel to &quot;captive&quot; animal performers.
