She was identified by<br \/>\n      the Minneapolis Star Tribune as Meghan Sennott, 20, the daughter of one<br \/>\n      of that newspaper&#8217;s photographers. He was notified about her death by U.S.<br \/>\n      Consulate officials in Lima.<\/p>\n<p>      She was a junior at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\">Boston University<\/a>, the paper said.<\/p>\n<p>      Officials were investigating the cause of the crash, but local media attributed<br \/>\n      the crash to either the driver falling asleep or a mechanical failure that<br \/>\n      had twice prompted the driver to pull over the vehicle, which carried about<br \/>\n      60 passengers.<\/p>\n<p>      Buses in Peru often are poorly maintained, and drivers frequently speed<br \/>\n      and pass each other on blind mountain curves.<\/p>\n<p>      Overall, 557 people were killed in rural bus accidents between July 2004<br \/>\n      and June 2005, according to Peru&#8217;s nonprofit Center for Investigation of<br \/>\n      Overland Transport.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/story\/0,2933,195593,00.html\">Fox<br \/>\n          News<\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><em>Our heart goes out to the family of Meghan Sennott.<br \/>\n        Any<br \/>\n        seasoned traveler knows taking a bus on the Gringo Trail is taking one&#8217;s<br \/>\n        life in one&#8217;s<br \/>\n        own hands.<br \/>\n        Of<br \/>\n        course,<br \/>\n        there<br \/>\n        is no other way to get around down there except hitch-hiking, which is<br \/>\n        like dipping your life in grease before taking it in your own hands,<br \/>\n        blindfolded.<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><em>As a seasoned survivor of myriad treks, long hauls and<br \/>\n        multi-country bus trips on the Gringo Trail, the Pan-American Highway,<br \/>\n        and smaller roads across the breadth and depth of South America, we have<br \/>\n        compiled a short list of tips for the less experienced adventurer.<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><font color=\"#000099\" size=\"+1\"><strong>The Dowbrigade&#8217;s<br \/>\n        Rules of the Road for Andean Bus Trips<\/strong><\/font><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Try to find a bus younger than you are, and which has<br \/>\n            no visible welding or patched tires<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>Make sure the bus has at least TWO decent spare tires<br \/>\n            before boarding<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>Before leaving, identify the driver, and engage in some<br \/>\n            casual conversation, to establish his sobriety<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>When in the mountains, avoid taking overnight buses\n<\/li>\n<li>If unable to avoid night buses, make sure to hit a<br \/>\n            pharmacy near the bus station<br \/>\n          before leaving, and stock up on barbiturates,<br \/>\n            pain-killers and anti-anxiety medication (no prescription needed)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>Bring your own bread, fruit and water, or fast, because<br \/>\n            the dives the driver stops at are all operated by syphallitic relatives<br \/>\n          as part of the Dysentery City chain<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>Avoid taking buses the day before a holiday, because<br \/>\n            everyone will be drunk<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>Avoid taking buses the day OF a holiday, because<br \/>\n          everyone will be drunk<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>Avoid taking buses the day AFTER a holiday, because<br \/>\n          everyone will be hung over<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>Finally, we have had great success (we are writing this,<br \/>\n            aren&#8217;t we) with a favorite personal technique; we always try to board<br \/>\n          buses which have among the passengers several Priests or Nuns, on<br \/>\n          the theory<br \/>\n          that<br \/>\n            this will keep the driver on his best behavior.
