As though monolingualism were something<br \/>\n        to be proud of rather than a national disgrace. As though a spirit as<br \/>\n        beautiful as that expressed by our anthem could anything but enriched<br \/>\n        by being translated into other languages.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">There have been over 850 versions of the national anthem<br \/>\n        recorded over the years<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2006\/04\/30\/AR2006043000935.html?nav=rss_print\/asection\"><\/a>,<br \/>\n        including a polka version, a kazoo band version, and translations into<br \/>\n        at least 20 languages, including Serbo-Croatian and Arabic. Who can forget<br \/>\n        the iconic Jimi Hendrix version from Woodstock, captured so vividly on<br \/>\n        film and vinyl, denounced at the time as disrespectful and subversive? <\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">How dare they question the sincerity and patriotism of those who sacrifice to make this country, and its anthem, their own?<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">This is not even the first Spanish language version of<br \/>\n        the anthem to appear.On a <a href=\"http:\/\/usinfo.state.gov\/esp\/home\/topics\/us_society_values\/national_symbols\/anthem_spanish.html\" target=\"_blank\">US<br \/>\n        State Department web site<\/a> (usinfo.state.gov)<br \/>\n        there are no less than three different Spanish language versions, and<br \/>\n        at the<a href=\"http:\/\/memory.loc.gov\/cocoon\/ihas\/loc.natlib.ihas.100000007\/pageturner.html?page=1&amp;section=\"> Library<br \/>\n        of Congress web site<\/a> you can peruse a <a href=\"http:\/\/memory.loc.gov\/cocoon\/ihas\/loc.natlib.ihas.100000007\/pageturner.html?page=1&amp;section=\">Spanish<br \/>\n        language set of sheet music<\/a> to the US Anthem &#8211; from 1917!<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">What&#8217;s next, banning the American Eagle as a possible infection<br \/>\n        vector for the Avian flu?<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Right wingers, Rednecks and Xenophobes have been working themselves into a dither over the new, We Are El Mundo style Spanish-lyrics version of the National Anthem.
