{"id":2676,"date":"2004-10-27T22:53:30","date_gmt":"2004-10-28T02:53:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/dbnews\/2004\/10\/27\/the-doctor-weighs-in\/"},"modified":"2004-10-27T22:53:30","modified_gmt":"2004-10-28T02:53:30","slug":"the-doctor-weighs-in","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/dowbrigade\/2004\/10\/27\/the-doctor-weighs-in\/","title":{"rendered":"The Doctor Weighs In"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name='a4068'><\/a><\/p>\n<table width=\"537\" border=\"0\">\n<tr>\n<td width=\"537\">\n<p align=\"left\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/dowbrigade\/HunterThomp.jpg\" width=\"170\" height=\"170\" align=\"left\">Hunter<br \/>\n        Thompson has long been one of our literary heroes and role models, ever<br \/>\n        since Fear and Loathing in Las<br \/>\n        Vegas ripped the vinyl horsehide off of &quot;objective journalism&quot; and showed<br \/>\n        what could be accomplished by diving headfirst into the moshpit miasma<br \/>\n        of modern America and completely erasing the line between coverer and<br \/>\n        covered. <\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">That being said, it pains us to note that the Good Doctor<br \/>\n        seems to be losing his edge.&nbsp; Whether this be from skills eroded<br \/>\n        by decades of alternately hard and indulgent living or the simple spiraling<br \/>\n        of the situation beyond even the ability of one of the greatest satirists<br \/>\n        of our age to capture in prose, is not for this humble observer to say,<br \/>\n        <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/politics\/story\/_\/id\/6562575?pageid=rs.Home&amp;pageregion=single7&amp;rnd=1098869468404&amp;has-player=true&amp;version=6.0.11.813ht\">his commentary in Rolling Stone<\/a> on the current electoral cycle pales<br \/>\n        in comparison to his trailblazing coverage of the Nixon campaigns in<br \/>\n         68 and 72, in that same publication.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">But then who among us is the same man we were in the late<br \/>\n        60&#8217;s and early 70&#8217;s?&nbsp; Many of us were never men, then nor now, and<br \/>\n        many were not even born 30 odd years ago. Lord knows, if we could afford<br \/>\n        the quantities and quality of intoxicants available to Thompson, we would<br \/>\n        have degenerated into incoherence long ago.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">Still, some of his observations are sharp and some of his<br \/>\n        similes still make us smile, and there are flashes of the old fire. Plus,<br \/>\n        it&#8217;s always worth reading a report from a true master who&#8217;s been there,<br \/>\n        and done it all:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"left\">Presidential politics is a vicious business, even for<br \/>\n          rich white men, and anybody who gets into it should be prepared to<br \/>\n          grapple with the<br \/>\n            meanest of the mean. The White House has never been seized by timid<br \/>\n            warriors. There are no rules, and the roadside is littered with wreckage.<br \/>\n            That is why they call it the passing lane.
