{"id":2555,"date":"2004-08-31T14:21:25","date_gmt":"2004-08-31T18:21:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/dbnews\/2004\/08\/31\/sevis-success-or-disaster\/"},"modified":"2004-08-31T14:21:25","modified_gmt":"2004-08-31T18:21:25","slug":"sevis-success-or-disaster","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/dowbrigade\/2004\/08\/31\/sevis-success-or-disaster\/","title":{"rendered":"SEVIS : Success or Disaster?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name='a3765'><\/a><\/p>\n<table width=\"537\" border=\"0\">\n<tr>\n<td width=\"537\">\n<p align=\"left\"><em>Despite repeated pleas from all of America&#8217;s<br \/>\n        major universities, despite continuing declines in foreign graduate students<br \/>\n        coming to the United States, despite lengthy delays and difficulties<br \/>\n        in obtaining student visas, and despite repeated breakdowns and glitches<br \/>\n        in implementation of SEVIS, the Student and Exchange Visitor Information<br \/>\n        System, an electronic tracking system designed to make sure Foreign Students<br \/>\n        actually study, and leave the country when they finish, the Department<br \/>\n        of Homeland Security is declaring the program a success.<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">Homeland Security officials are touting the success of<br \/>\n        the 1-year-old Web-based system that tracks foreign students at U.S.<br \/>\n      universities and colleges and has led to 187 arrests for various violations.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\">A total of 8,737 colleges and exchange visitor programs,<br \/>\n        representing more than 9,500 campuses, are certified to participate in<br \/>\n        the program.<br \/>\n          Information on more than 770,000 students and exchange visitors is<br \/>\n          maintained in the database.
