{"id":2355,"date":"2004-05-01T10:02:40","date_gmt":"2004-05-01T14:02:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/dbnews\/2004\/05\/01\/the-fat-boys-culture-of-the-abdomen\/"},"modified":"2004-05-01T10:02:40","modified_gmt":"2004-05-01T14:02:40","slug":"the-fat-boys-culture-of-the-abdomen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/dowbrigade\/2004\/05\/01\/the-fat-boys-culture-of-the-abdomen\/","title":{"rendered":"The Fat Boys &#8211; Culture of the Abdomen"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name='a3314'><\/a><\/p>\n<table width=\"537\" border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tr>\n<td>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/dowbrigade\/fatguys.jpg\" width=\"537\" height=\"349\"><\/p>\n<p><em>The<br \/>\n            socio-cultural and economic dimensions of the obesity gap are clearly<br \/>\n            visible in the third world and developing countries.&nbsp; Here, (the Dowbrigade is currently reporting from Ecuador)<br \/>\n            as was the case in the United States in the past, the obese are seen<br \/>\n            as<br \/>\n            enviously successful, while most of the poor people are lean and<br \/>\n            hungry looking<\/em><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p> Almost every day, it seems,<br \/>\n              there is another alarming study about the dangers of being fat<br \/>\n              or a new theory about its causes and cures. <\/p>\n<p>              But a growing group of historians and cultural critics who study<br \/>\n                fat say this obsession is based less on science than on morality.<br \/>\n                Insidious attitudes about<br \/>\npolitics, sex, race or class are at the heart of the frenzy over obesity, these<br \/>\nscholars say, a frenzy they see as comparable to the Salem witch trials, McCarthyism<br \/>\nand even the eugenics movement.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;We are in a moral<br \/>\n              panic about obesity,&quot; said Sander L.
