{"id":2330,"date":"2004-04-20T12:27:44","date_gmt":"2004-04-20T16:27:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/dbnews\/2004\/04\/20\/les-miserables\/"},"modified":"2004-04-20T12:27:44","modified_gmt":"2004-04-20T16:27:44","slug":"les-miserables","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/dowbrigade\/2004\/04\/20\/les-miserables\/","title":{"rendered":"Les Miserables"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name='a3253'><\/a><\/p>\n<table width=\"537\" border=\"0\">\n<tr>\n<td>\n<p>While we are not sure our paltry academic salary even qualifies us<br \/>\n        as &quot;Middle Class&quot;, and we are certainly not miserable these days of tennis<br \/>\n        and beach combing on the pristine Pacific coast of Ecuador, we strongly<br \/>\n        sympathize with the agonizing erosion of both the standard of living<br \/>\n        and quality of life experienced by most Americans with less than a million<br \/>\n        dollars of net worth.<\/p>\n<p>However, we are less than impressed by the John Kerry campaigns latest<br \/>\n        effort to spin, package and sell this bottom line by couching it in the<br \/>\n        format of a statistically valid, social scientific think-tank type report,<br \/>\n        ingeniously titled the &quot;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.johnkerry.com\/pressroom\/releases\/pr_2004_0412.html\">Middle-Class<br \/>\n        Misery Index<\/a>&quot;.&nbsp; Quite<br \/>\n        frankly we feel most sociology majors from decent universities could<br \/>\n        have done a better job at dressing up dubious data like this.&nbsp; The report is rife with dubious statistics,<br \/>\n        slanted interpretations, misleading graphics and one-sided analysis.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps the campaign team would be wiser to stick to press releases<br \/>\n        and sound bytes, and leave the statistical pontificating to al least<br \/>\n        marginally independent academic researchers. How hard would that be,<br \/>\n        considering that almost all of the academics we know are already firmly<br \/>\n        within the Kerry camp.<\/p>\n<p>The following graph is a case in point. It sure looks like it shows<br \/>\n        that the &quot;Misery Index&quot; is actually going DOWN.
