{"id":2242,"date":"2004-03-17T23:25:00","date_gmt":"2004-03-18T03:25:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/dbnews\/2004\/03\/17\/scottish-scientists-solve-stout-myster"},"modified":"2004-03-17T23:25:00","modified_gmt":"2004-03-18T03:25:00","slug":"scottish-scientists-solve-stout-mystery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/dowbrigade\/2004\/03\/17\/scottish-scientists-solve-stout-mystery\/","title":{"rendered":"Scottish Scientists Solve Stout Mystery"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name='a3023'><\/a><\/p>\n<table width=\"537\" border=\"0\">\n<tr>\n<td width=\"537\">\n<p align=\"left\"><strong><font color=\"#990000\" size=\"+1\">Scientists have shown that the bubbles in a pint of Guinness<br \/>\n        really do move down instead of up. <\/font><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/dowbrigade\/guinn.jpg\" width=\"410\" height=\"308\"><\/p>\n<p>To mark St Patrick&#8217;s Day, a team of Scottish and US researchers has<br \/>\n        produced video evidence to show the bubbles being dragged to the bottom<br \/>\n        of the glass.<\/p>\n<p>        An earlier study concluded that the phenomenon may only have been an<br \/>\n        optical illusion.<br \/>\n        Close examination reveals that as the pint settles, bubbles touching<br \/>\n        the walls of the glass experience drag that prevents them floating up.<\/p>\n<p>        Bubbles in the centre of the glass, however, are free to rise. A circular<br \/>\n        flow is created, causing bubbles at the the edge to be pushed downwards<br \/>\n        on the inside surface of the glass. <\/p>\n<p>        The effect occurs in any liquid, say the scientists, but the contrast<br \/>\n        between the dark stout and its creamy bubbles makes it easier to spot<br \/>\n        in Guinness.<\/p>\n<p>        The Scottish scientists worked in collaboration with colleagues led by<br \/>\n      Professor Dick Zare at the University of Stanford in California.<\/p>\n<p>from<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ananova.com\/news\/story\/sm_893503.html\"> Ananova<\/a><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Scientists have shown that the bubbles in a pint of Guinness really do move down instead of up.
