Dowbrigade
\n has been digesting the
\n discussions<\/a> from last nights Thursday
\n Night’s Blogger<\/a> Group, which is groping to find a future apart from
\n its role as backup singers to the inestimable Dave
\n Winer’s<\/a> Traveling
\n Circus and Roiling Rock Extravaganza.<\/p>\n

It’s a talented group of misfits who somehow seem to fit together, at least
\n on Thursday nights: Andrew<\/a> the
\n dour and brilliant MIT coder, the demure but lethally incisive Redhead<\/a>,
\n whose light touch on the keyboard kicks our collective asses nightly on
\n the rating board, Jammaster
\n j<\/a>, the super-librarian
\n who doesn’t care for books and keeps us all tenuously tied to the Berkman
\n mothership, The Kid<\/a>, whose whose
\n voracious brain seems to be consuming great swaths of the intellectual
\n landscape at a bite, and your humble
\n correspondent<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Cameos from Lydon<\/a>, Sooz<\/a>, Seth<\/a> the gloomy gnome, Halley<\/a>, always up for an
\n acerbic comment, the God Squad<\/a>, and a revolving roster of itinerant geniuses,
\n crackpots, malcontents and miscreants.<\/p>\n

There seemed to be a consensus that the group up to this point was filling
\n three roles: 1) proselytizing blogging within the Harvard-MIT community,
\n and easing people into the blogoshpere with training and support 2) Encouraging,
\n leading and providing a forum for discussion and research into all aspects
\n of the blogging phenomena, including what they are, how they are influencing
\n and being influenced by society, and where they are going, and 3) Offering
\n support in the implementation of the the Manila blogging tool at Berkman.<\/p>\n

As was astutely pointed out at the meeting, there are probably only 10
\n people in the world really qualified to carry out #3, and Dave is the only
\n one of them within a few thousand miles of here (although rumor has it
\n he fled the left coast to escape incessant questions on this very topic),
\n so in this role he is irreplaceable.<\/p>\n

But in the first two roles there may be some room to grow and serve the
\n community. There are some interesting projects in planning, and the blogging
\n phenomena continues to explode all around us. Like any ad hoc group the
\n Thursday Night Bloggers’ effectiveness and staying power will be determined
\n by the demands and opportunities presented in the course of events, and
\n the mettle of the individuals involved.<\/p>\n
