{"id":153,"date":"2005-04-04T19:11:53","date_gmt":"2005-04-04T23:11:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/dbnews\/2005\/04\/04\/expensive-name-dropping\/"},"modified":"2005-04-04T19:11:53","modified_gmt":"2005-04-04T23:11:53","slug":"expensive-name-dropping","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/dowbrigade\/2005\/04\/04\/expensive-name-dropping\/","title":{"rendered":"Expensive Name Dropping"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name='a4806'><\/a><\/p>\n<p><P align=\"justify\">Just when you thought the Federal Election Commission had it out for the blogosphere, the <A href=\"http:\/\/www.sfgov.org\/site\/bdsupvrs_index.asp\" target=\"_new\"><FONT color=\"#183593\">San Francisco Board of Supervisors<\/FONT><\/A> took it up a notch and announced yesterday that it will soon vote on a <A href=\"http:\/\/www.sfgov.org\/site\/uploadedfiles\/bdsupvrs\/committees\/materials\/041489.pdf\" target=\"_new\"><FONT color=\"#183593\">city ordinance<\/FONT><\/A> that would <B>require local bloggers to register with the city <A href=\"http:\/\/www.sfgov.org\/site\/ethics_index.asp?id=13625\" target=\"_new\"><FONT color=\"#183593\">Ethics Commission<\/FONT><\/A> and report all blog-related costs that exceed $1,000 in the aggregate.<\/B><\/P><br \/>\n<P align=\"left\">Blogs that mention candidates for local office that receive more than 500 hits will be forced to pay a registration fee and will be subject to website traffic audits, according to Chad Jacobs, a San Francisco City Attorney. <\/P><br \/>\n<P align=\"left\"><EM>This is certainly a bizarre development.&nbsp; Why only local candidates? Does it apply to blogs hosted in Timbucktu as well as SF? Does an inspirational sack of the Kind constitute a &#8220;blog related expense&#8221;? Are they supplying their own free traffic meters? If you mention the names of all five candidates to a local office, do you have to pay five registration fees?
