A Lawerence, Mass grandmother was selling &quot;seats&quot;<br \/>\n          in the soon-to-be smashed vehicles for $300, with the expectation that<br \/>\n          each &quot;victim&quot; would collect up to $5,000 from insurance.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr valign=\"top\">\n<td colspan=\"2\">\n<p>\n      However it seems the mastermind, 64-year-old Altagracia Arias,<br \/>\n        forgot to fasten her seat belt, and was killed in the September 4th set-up<br \/>\n      smash-up. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boston.com\/dailyglobe2\/257\/metro\/Collision_scams_seen_as_part_of_high_stakes_game%2B.shtml\">Globe article here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Reminds me of Junkie Jake, our downstairs neighbor in the Blue Diamond<br \/>\n      in Austin, Texas back in the 70&#8217;s, who shot off his big toe with a .38<br \/>\n        in order to insure a supply of pharmaceutical pain pills. I watched him<br \/>\n        milk that stump for two years, removing the dressing and messing with<br \/>\n        the wound to prevent it from healing.
