The Red Sox were only a half-game behind the Yankees in<br \/>\n        the American League East, and three games in front of Oakland for the<br \/>\n        wild card slot, and I was starting to organize my emotional life around<br \/>\n        their games. I checked the schedule before I made appointments, and come<br \/>\n        game time I was hanging on every pitch.<\/p>\n<p>        I almost came out and told you about the little voice inside my head<br \/>\n        whispering insistently that, finally, this was the year. Almost went<br \/>\n        on the record<br \/>\n        as saying the Yanks were going down this time, that I had once again,<br \/>\n        like a thrice times three times loser in love, fallen for this<br \/>\n        years edition of the Olde Towne Team, and that I realized the time had<br \/>\n        come to rise above the shards of my oft-broken baseball heart and find<br \/>\n        the courage to love again.\n        <\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td colspan=\"3\">\n      Thank god I was too lazy or gun-shy to get around to it.<br \/>\n      Today, with the Sox a solid seven behind the Yanks and fading fast, I can<br \/>\n      see clearly what a pathetic sap I almost was. The Sox, who have made the<br \/>\n      August<br \/>\n      Fold<br \/>\n      an<br \/>\n      art form, are at it again.
