The latest officially acknoledged<br \/>\n        death toll in this month&#8217;s  heat wave is 10,000! Meanwhile, in Southern<br \/>\n        neighbor Spain, where the temperatures were even higher than in France,<br \/>\n        there were only 40 deaths and in Germany 38, although Portugal and Italy are<br \/>\n        also reporting significant numbers.<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td height=\"92\" colspan=\"3\">\n<p>Now, the French government, responding to<br \/>\n        intense criticsm from newspapers, opposition parties and public opinion,<br \/>\n        has blasted back at the public itself, saying most of the dead were elderly<br \/>\n        and infirm<br \/>\n        citizens abandoned in their apartments while family members left town<br \/>\n        on traditional August vacations. Quite unseemly, but terribly French.<\/p>\n<p>      <\/a><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td height=\"92\" colspan=\"2\">&nbsp;<\/td>\n<td height=\"92\">\n<p>&#8220;Many fragile people died alone in their homes.
