{"id":104,"date":"2005-03-04T22:00:00","date_gmt":"2005-03-05T02:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/dbnews\/2005\/03\/04\/tuning-in-at-the-library\/"},"modified":"2005-03-04T22:00:00","modified_gmt":"2005-03-05T02:00:00","slug":"tuning-in-at-the-library","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/dowbrigade\/2005\/03\/04\/tuning-in-at-the-library\/","title":{"rendered":"Tuning In at the Library"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name='a4680'><\/a><\/p>\n<table width=\"537\" border=\"0\">\n<tr>\n<td>\n<p align=\"justify\"><em><\/em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/dowbrigade\/SonjaDora.jpg\" width=\"537\" height=\"200\"><br \/>\n        <em>This<br \/>\n        story has almost everything we look for in a good blog posting.&nbsp; It<br \/>\n        features an innovative use of one of our favorite technologies, libraries<br \/>\n        and librarians, and a money-saving move by a public institution.&nbsp;Everything,<br \/>\n        that is, except an opportunity to feature a little artfully exposed flesh.<br \/>\n        So we decided to exercise a little creative licence, at the end of the<br \/>\n        story&#8230;<br \/>\n        <\/em><br \/>\nChecking out a new iPod now applies to more than shopping trips or web browsing.<br \/>\n  This week the South Huntington Public Library on Long Island, New York, became<br \/>\n  one of the first public libraries in the country to loan out <a href=\"http:\/\/alpha3.suffolk.lib.ny.us\/search%7ES65\/r?SH%20Books%20on%20iPod\">iPod<br \/>\n  shuffles<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>For the past three weeks, the library ran a pilot program using the portable<br \/>\nMP3 devices to store audio books downloaded from the Apple iTunes Music Store.<br \/>\nThey started with six shuffles, and now are up to a total of 10. Each device<br \/>\nholds a single audio book.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">&quot;It&#8217;s changed the books on tape from a car-only<br \/>\n        experience to a bring-it-with-you experience,&quot; according to library<br \/>\n        patron Sonia Dora McGillicutty (see photo), who has been listening to<br \/>\n        the library&#8217;s Shuffle of Azar Nafisi&#8217;s<br \/>\n        <em>Reading Lolita in Tehran<\/em> to unwind from the stress of her job<br \/>\n        as a software engineer.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><em>The article doesn&#8217;t mention what, if any, anti-copying<br \/>\n        protection the iPods have. Perhaps they rely on old-fashioned good faith,<br \/>\n        which seem to work out just fine for the books and other materials they<br \/>\n        lend.
