{"id":102,"date":"2005-03-03T08:30:27","date_gmt":"2005-03-03T12:30:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/dbnews\/2005\/03\/03\/liberation-day\/"},"modified":"2005-03-03T08:30:27","modified_gmt":"2005-03-03T12:30:27","slug":"liberation-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/dowbrigade\/2005\/03\/03\/liberation-day\/","title":{"rendered":"Liberation Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a name='a4675'><\/a><\/p>\n<table width=\"537\" border=\"0\">\n<tr>\n<td>\n<p><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/blogs\/static\/dowbrigade\/netdowns.jpg\" width=\"263\" height=\"183\" align=\"left\"><\/em>Sitting<br \/>\n        in our office at 7:30 in the morning, waiting for the shit to hit the<br \/>\n        fan.&nbsp;The Bright Boys in IT have moved our academic<br \/>\n          program over to a File Maker Pro database with a browser-based interface.<br \/>\n          Unlike the staff, who use Filemaker every day, faculty only use it<br \/>\n          twice a semester, to write midterm and final evaluations.<br \/>\n          The idea was, with a browser based interface we could work from home.<\/p>\n<p>We are sure the webberized version worked fine when the boys tried<br \/>\n          it out in their alpha phase, but today is the last day of the first<br \/>\n          half of the semester (Spring Break starts tomorrow &#8211; go figure) and<br \/>\n          last night when all 32 faculty got on-line at the same time to write<br \/>\n          their evals, the whole thing broke.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone hoped the problem was just THEM, or that the computers<br \/>\n      in their offices would be unaffected, so the office is crowded with edgy<br \/>\n          irate teachers swilling caffeine and hovering in the hallways, waiting<br \/>\n          for the techies to come in and feel their wrath.<\/p>\n<p>It is an especially poignant moment for the Dowbrigade, as we<br \/>\n          are teaching in a special, intensive, six-week program and so today<br \/>\n          is OUR LAST DAY teaching until June.&nbsp;OUR students will not be<br \/>\n          coming back following break. And good riddance. There have<br \/>\n          been numerous incidents over the<br \/>\n          last<br \/>\n          six<br \/>\n          weeks which have shaken our dedication to the vocation but which we<br \/>\n          have been unable to blog due to our strict policy against writing anything<br \/>\n          about current students.
