{"id":72,"date":"2011-05-24T14:44:26","date_gmt":"2011-05-24T18:44:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/cyberlawclinic\/?p=72"},"modified":"2011-05-24T14:53:22","modified_gmt":"2011-05-24T18:53:22","slug":"rethink-music","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/cyberlawclinicold\/2011\/05\/24\/rethink-music\/","title":{"rendered":"Rethink Music"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last month, <a title=\"Berklee College of Music\" href=\"http:\/\/berklee.edu\" target=\"_blank\">Berklee College of Music<\/a> and <a title=\"MIDEM\" href=\"http:\/\/www.midem.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">MIDEM<\/a> &#8212; in association with the <a title=\"Berkman Center for Internet &amp; Society\" href=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\" target=\"_blank\">Berkman Center for Internet &amp; Society<\/a> and <a title=\"Harvard Business School\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hbs.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">Harvard Business School<\/a> &#8212; put on a conference called <a title=\"Rethink Music\" href=\"http:\/\/rethink-music.com\" target=\"_blank\">Rethink Music<\/a>.\u00a0 The conference addressed issues relating to &#8220;Creativity, Commerce, and Policy in the 21st Century,&#8221; and it brought together a wide range of stakeholders to &#8220;engage in critical dialogue examining the business and rights challenges  facing   the music industry in the digital era&#8221; and &#8220;formulate ideas  for the creation   and distribution of new music and other creative  works.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Cyberlaw Clinic played an active role in the event.\u00a0 Spring 2011 Clinic student Adam Gottesfeld worked with Berkman Center Research Assistant Joey Seiler and Cyberlaw Clinic Assistant Director Christopher Bavitz to assemble the Berkman Center&#8217;s &#8220;<a title=\"Rethinking Music\" href=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/publications\/2011\/Rethinking_Music\" target=\"_blank\">Rethinking Music<\/a>&#8221; briefing book, which conference attendees received.\u00a0 Gottesfeld, Seiler, and Bavitz prepared the Center&#8217;s <a title=\"Framing Paper\" href=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/sites\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/files\/Rethinking_Music_Framing_Paper.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">framing paper<\/a>, which introduced the book and teed up a number of important issues addressed during the conference.\u00a0 Clinic student Cristina Fernandez worked with <a title=\"WGBH\" href=\"http:\/\/wgbh.org\" target=\"_blank\">WGBH<\/a>&#8216;s Deputy General Counsel, Jay Fialkov, on another piece included in the book, &#8220;<a title=\"Music Rights Clearances and Public Media\" href=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/sites\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/files\/Rethinking_Music_Rights_Clearances_Public_Media.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Music Rights Clearances and Public Media<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Working with the Berkman Center&#8217;s Program Coordinator, Amar Ashar, Bavitz helped to manage Berkman&#8217;s overall role in the event.\u00a0 The Berkman team oversaw an academic <a title=\"Call for Papers\" href=\"http:\/\/cyber.law.harvard.edu\/node\/6456\" target=\"_blank\">call for papers<\/a> that resulted in the selection of an article by <a title=\"Mary LaFrance\" href=\"http:\/\/law.unlv.edu\/faculty\/mary-lafrance.html\" target=\"_blank\">Mary LaFrance<\/a> of UNLV&#8217;s <a title=\"William S. Boyd School of Law\" href=\"http:\/\/law.unlv.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">William S.
