<\/a><\/p>\n

It seems like a really long time since I’ve posted anything
\nhere, and there are so many cool things I’ve done in the last couple of months
\nthat it’s hard to figure out where to start.  <\/span>Time seems to be speeding up now, which is a
\nsure sign that I’m closer to the end of my time in Panama
\nthan the beginning.  <\/span>Supposedly the dry
\nseason is over and the rains are on their way. 
\n<\/span>It certainly seemed like that two weeks ago, when just about every
\nafternoon seemed to end in a downpour and I became reacquainted with the
\nmeaning of “soaked to the bone.”  <\/span>Now,
\nhowever, the weather gods seemed to have changed their minds.  <\/span>This week has been beautiful, sunny, summer
\nweather—and I’ve been stuck inside writing a paper and staring out the window
\nlongingly.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Bob Lessnau came back to BCI at the end of February to help
\nme dart and radio-collar a few more monkeys for 
\n<\/span>my study.  <\/span>This time around was a
\nwhole lot easier than last time.  <\/span>We got
\nfive monkeys with relatively little trauma (either emotional or physical, to us
\nor them).  <\/span>Interestingly, we only got
\nfemales this time—the males just wouldn’t give us a clear shot at their
\nbutts.  <\/span>We even seem to have gotten
\nbetter at catching the monkeys in the hammocks when they fall—we only missed
\ntwo!<\/p>\n

\nwith us one day and took some nice photos.<\/p>\n

Ella was named after the demon-capuchin monkey from hell in
\nthe horror movie “Monkey Shine”—high quality cinema if I’ve ever seen it.  <\/span><\/p>\n

This was the photo they ended up using in the STRI news
\nstory about my research.  <\/span>It took me a
\nwhile, but I kind of like it.  <\/span><\/p>\n

There was only really one downside to this round of
\ndarting:  <\/span>dry season means ticks.  <\/span>We were all covered head to toe in tick bites
\nafter a day of darting.<\/p>\n

This spring, BCI has had its very own Christo to compete
\nwith the beautiful but strange installation in Central Park. <\/span>Andrea has been wrapping her greenhouses in
\nshade-cloth, so her seedlings won’t fry in the sun.  <\/span>Unfortunately, standing on a ladder in the
\nsun all day long for several days in a row, sewing together strips of shade
\ncloth may have fried her brain.  <\/span>You can’t
\nsay it doesn’t look pretty.<\/p>\n

I also spent a really fun afternoon last month moored in the
\nlake below a fruiting fig tree that lots of monkeys were feeding in.  <\/span>Alex :<\/p>\n

and I took a picnic dinner, watched the howler monkeys and
\ncapuchin monkeys gorging themselves<\/p>\n

and then after dark got to see kinkajous feeding in the same
\nfig using the ARTS lab’s 3.5 million candle power flashlight!<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

We also had an adventure driving out to Fort San Lorenzo on the Caribbean
\ncoast—I’m finally 25 and can rent cars!! 
\n<\/span>The first part of the adventure involved getting lost in downtown Colon (not really someplace you want to be lost!).<\/p>\n

Then we got to drive over one of the Gatun locks<\/p>\n

Then came the never ending dirt road.  <\/span>We kept passing signs that gave the distance
\nto the fort.  <\/span>Except the further we
\ndrove, the further away the fort seemed to get. 
\n<\/span>You’d pass a sign saying 9 km to Fort San Lorenzo, and 10 minutes later
\nthe next sign would say it was 15 km to the fort.  <\/span>(I learned a few weeks later, while
\nvacationing with my parents, that this kind of confusion about distances seems
\nto be ubiquitous in Panama).  <\/span>We did finally get to the fort however, and
\nit was absolutely worth it.<\/p>\n

The other really cool thing I did before going on vacation
\nwith my parents was visit the Gatun locks.
