{"id":786,"date":"2010-02-03T22:38:31","date_gmt":"2010-02-04T05:38:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/cqtwo\/?p=786"},"modified":"2010-02-15T23:37:51","modified_gmt":"2010-02-16T06:37:51","slug":"tajik-buddhist-monasteries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/cqtwo\/2010\/02\/03\/tajik-buddhist-monasteries\/","title":{"rendered":"Tajik Buddhist Monasteries"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Probably the best-known Buddhist monastic archeological site in what is now Tajikistan is at <a title=\"Ajina Tepa\" href=\"http:\/\/whc.unesco.org\/en\/tentativelists\/1382\/\">Ajina Tepa<\/a>, which has been diligently excavated and <a title=\"Ajina Tepa excavations\" href=\"http:\/\/www.artbooks.com\/titles\/046\/Item46294.htm\">published<\/a> by Litvinsky and others.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a fascinating site.<\/p>\n<p>Lesser known, and less impressive in size and sophistication if not in location than Ajina Tepa, is the stupa at Vrang, on the Afghan border in the Pamirs.  (It&#8217;s at 37\u00b0 0&#8242; N 72\u00b0 22&#8242; E.)<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gadling.com\/2006\/09\/29\/hidden-gems-tajikistans-pamirs-and-wakhan-corridor\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"Vrang stupa\" src=\"http:\/\/www.blogcdn.com\/www.gadling.com\/media\/2006\/09\/buddhist-stuppa.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"387\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The stupa seems to be in very good condition and there are supposedly<br \/>\ncaves that served as cells for monks surrounding it.
