{"id":59,"date":"2006-10-29T09:56:17","date_gmt":"2006-10-29T16:56:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.law.harvard.edu\/cqtwo\/2006\/10\/29\/oracles-unbreakable-linux-annoucement\/"},"modified":"2006-10-29T09:56:17","modified_gmt":"2006-10-29T16:56:17","slug":"oracles-unbreakable-linux-annoucement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.blogs.harvard.edu\/cqtwo\/2006\/10\/29\/oracles-unbreakable-linux-annoucement\/","title":{"rendered":"Oracle&#8217;s Unbreakable Linux Annoucement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oracle.com\/technologies\/linux\/index.html\">Oracle is going to support Red Hat<\/a>, not Ubuntu as the gossip had been.\u00a0 It doesn&#8217;t seem like they&#8217;re going to offer a packaged solution, at least not yet, one that includes the operating system with the database, so you still have to get the distribution from Red Hat (without the support) and install it as usual.\u00a0 Except now patches and support come from Oracle.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/weblog.infoworld.com\/openresource\/archives\/2006\/10\/analyzing_the_o.html \">Matt Asay<\/a> points to <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.ingres.com\/davedargo\/content\/2006-10-25.html \">a good analysis by Dave Dargo<\/a>, formerly of Oracle, now at Ingres.<\/p>\n<p>Dargo writes, &#8220;My contention has been that this is more of an emotional reaction to the market capitalization of Red Hat than a sound business decision that delivers any added value to the industry or to the end customers.&#8221;\u00a0 And later he adds, &#8220;If Oracle is tremendously successful in taking Red Hat\u2019s business then, ultimately, Red Hat won\u2019t be around. Oracle will then either need to acquire Red Hat or staff up to include the same resources that Red Hat has in building, distributing and supporting their product.
